I'm very disappointed of the campus shooting that occurred in University of California, Berkeley a week ago. A man pulled out a gun and fired into the air after his demands for the music to be turned down and for a phone charger went unmet, leading to a heated altercation. Police officers were already in the scene, arresting the man within a minute after firing the gun. Although there were no injuries reported, this raises questions and concerns about UC Berkeley's emergency notification system, WarnMe. Let's talk about the delays of WarnMe, a notification system in the UC Berkeley community that automatically sends notifications to students when a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurring on the campus that involves an immediate threat to the health or safety of students. WarnMe is also used to send timely warnings and community advisories from campus police (UCPD). After shots were fired near student-interacted area, the campus sent an emergency WarnMe notification via email regarding the incident, which was delayed for approximately 40 minutes. The notification described the incident as an "aggravated assault," with no mention of the shots fired or even urging students to shelter in place in campus building or residence halls. However, students were able to get firsthand updates through another mobile app, Citizen, that sends users location-based safety alerts in real time. The real question is, how can we trust the campus to protect their students when the WarnMe system failed to notify students immediately on an incident that could cause potential threat to the safety of students? #ucberkeley #students #campussafety #shooting
