Statistics - what do they actually mean? When preparing my presentation for tomorrow night entitled 'Beyond Conviction', I wanted to get an understanding of just how many reports to the Police in relation to sexual offending end in conviction. I looked at statistics from England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Service Justice System. On the surface, some of these areas seemed to be quite successful in securing convictions, however the numbers only related to those cases taken to Court. I wanted to know the numbers from the cases reported to the Police versus conviction. This time the numbers were not so great for all areas. So what do we do for those people who have reported to the Police but the case never reaches the Court? How do we provide ongoing support for those whose case at Court did not have a conviction? I will talk about how this doesn't always have to be a negative outcome for the person but that it can be the start to their personal road for recovery or taking back ownership of their lives. The advent of and proliferation of "civilian oversight," of police brings about important questions on these entities. Here, I provide my experiences over the years of dealing with both police auditors and civilian oversight boards. Question: If training in use of force is so important for police (and it is), why are these entities allowed to exist with little to no training? In the military, soldiers are subject to #UnlimitedLiability —they can be legally ordered to risk their lives, even unto death. This concept is ingrained in military duty and expectations.
