Here's some valuable information about plumbing careers: 1. Job Overview: Plumbing involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This includes working with pipes, fixtures, and appliances related to water supply, drainage, and gas systems. Plumbers also diagnose and troubleshoot issues, ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations. 2. Education and Training: While some plumbers enter the field through apprenticeships, others pursue formal education through trade schools or community colleges. Training typically includes a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Licensing requirements vary by location, but many areas require plumbers to pass a licensing exam and complete a certain number of work hours as an apprentice. 4. Career Paths: Plumbing offers various career paths, including: · Residential Plumber: Specializing in homes and small-scale projects. · Commercial Plumber: Focusing on larger commercial and industrial buildings. · Service Technician: Handling repair and maintenance tasks. · Pipefitter: Working with high-pressure piping systems. · Plumbing Inspector: Ensuring code compliance in new construction. 5. This was the question I asked myself. What career path am I starting with? As the day goes by this thoughts continue to grow even stronger. Then I reached out to a lecturer who then gave me hints on what to look out for. Firstly, I did an HSE course, then move on to learning #Engineeringjobsresponsibilities, #Engineeringjobsintheindustries, #Engineeringjobsreadiness and so on. I had equipment maintenance training, I had machine installation training, I had basic training on machining but needed to become a professional practitioner in all these skills. What did I do as official employment wasn't coming through? I did more #improvement training. I acquire a craftsman skill in lathe/milling machine maintenance and servicing. I applied as a #Volunteer worker and was accepted. Sometime all we need is an opportunity to display/put our skills and talent into use. This #Volunteer job made me to gain more skills and gave me a better understanding to what being a #Teamplayer entails, working under pressure/emotional control where you get yelled at, time management and on-the-job physicality. I was happy I applied as a volunteer meaning no wages or salary, my lunch during work and transportation to work are mine alone. This gave the impression to the employees that I was ready to learn which made to give me the necessary skill set to start my career as a #MaintenanceEngineer in #Hydraulicpumps. Apply as a #Volunteer to grow more/new skill set. When your desired career job officially isn't coming through, apply for as a #Volunteer as it will open a new better path for you. Believe me.

One of the biggest failures of the conversation around vocational careers and the trades: it doesn't go hard enough on just how much these jobs are about computing and robotics as they are about the hands-on expertise. Cars are basically computers. (Related: The world needs EV mechanics especially — now *there* is a career where you're unlikely to get laid off every two years.) Farming, mining, and manufacturing? Robots, robots, robots! And on and on. But the only way people — especially in the media can talk about this stuff is dirty hands blue collar jobs. As if we're still living in the 1960s. Two interviews I was really proud of from The Elective tried to put better info into the ecosystem. One was with a leader of Massachusetts' superb (and successful) CTE program: https://lnkd.in/ea7Dhq7M The other was with John Deere's director of emerging technology: https://lnkd.in/ekqrFUa We all need to do better when engaging with this conversation! Because a nation without plumbers, mechanics, carpenters, tradespeople is a nation that will cave in on itself.
Skilled tradespeople and technicians, we need more of you! I hope the next generation has the courage to follow their own path and recognize we need all kinds of people with all kinds of skill sets to foster innovation. I am thinking things like a skilled plumber building training data for an AI algorithm for an initial diagnosis. Similarly, a car mechanic / HVAC technician labeling audio clips of car / HVAC systems noises for an initial diagnosis. Not everything has to be GenAI/LLMs! I would be super excited to hear about a skilled tradesperson founding a company to do the above and/or use it as an educational platform to train the next generation of talent in their field.
