This past weekend my 8-year-old kid and I went to a summer camp fair. 25+ summer camps in a room encouraging parents to learn about their program. Over this week, I want to share tips for summer camps on how to have a successful encounter with a family at a fair: TIP #1 Initiate the conversation! Our favorite camps in the room were the ones that initiated the conversation with us. It might have been as simple as complimenting my kid’s dress or saying "hi! how are you?" With the camps in the room - 20% initiated the conversation with my 8-year-old. - 20% initiated the conversation with me. - 60% did not initiate the conversation. First impressions should be communicating a warm, welcoming presence. This will help build trust between the camp and the family. Trust is one of the most important factors families consider when looking for a camp.

https://lnkd.in/erksq5tm Week three of our summer camp.Summer camp offers a unique blend of fun and learning, particularly benefiting children with special needs. These camps provide structured activities that promote social interaction, skill development, and self-confidence. Engaging in group sessions allows children to practice communication, cooperation, and problem-solving in a supportive environment. These experiences are crucial for preparing them for the school setting, where they will need to manage similar interactions and tasks.Additionally, summer camps often incorporate therapeutic activities tailored to individual needs, enhancing physical, cognitive, and emotional development. By participating in these activities, children with special needs can develop resilience, adaptability, and a sense of accomplishment. This holistic approach not only prepares them for the academic challenges of a classroom but also helps them navigate the social aspects of school life, fostering a smoother transition and a more inclusive educational experience.

Being a summer camp counselor set me up for LIFE, but HOW exactly? Be Flexible Things rarely go exactly how you plan when dealing with 100+ kids and dozens of daily activities. Being able to entertain through different methods on the fly with limited supplies is an art. Energy Matters It’s only a bad day if you let it be, and kids pick up on your energy like a bloodhound. If you aren’t excited about what is next, why should they be? Making a glass-half-full perspective your default spills over into every other aspect of your life. Faith (in myself) Without realizing it, you’re leading groups of people and making automatic decisions based on information and instinct. In this process, you build trust with both others and yourself. I could go on for ages, but you get the idea—those summer experiences manifested into skills I now carry in my personal and professional life. P.S., if you’re a former camp counselor, you know how easy it is to spot another in the wild! Volunteer It’s a powerful word. The 🎆impact🎇 is more powerful. Those who volunteer for unpaid work give time in exchange of a benefit to the greater good. On Saturdays in early summer, I volunteer — along with 80-100 other great people — to help run a youth swim meet. Officials, timers, ready bench, concessions… the positions are plentiful. Also plentiful (with kids & adults): ✅ Smiles ✅ Sportsmanship ✅ Friendships ✅ Fun Sometimes I’m not sure who has more fun — the kids or adults. Without the volunteers, the swimmeet — and dozens like it in our area — simply wouldn’t happen. Without volunteers, so many organizations that do great work for other would not exist at the level they do today - or at all. If you have time, consider sharing a little of it with others. If you have a skill or passion, even better! How (and where) do you share your time? Where else would you want to?
