For over a decade, Alliance for a Healthier Generation has partnered with National Recreation and Park Association to create healthier communities across the country. I always love being at #NRPAConference; today I had the honor of attending a session by Tiff Cunin and Cal Dobbs on Fighting Transphobia in Youth Sports. 4 fav quotes: (1) Own your intentions. Own your impact. - Tiff, (2) Trans kids are kids, and kids just love to play - Cal, (3) Parks and recreation serve millions of youth, second only to public schools - Tiff, (4) When we're distracted by the symptoms, we're not addressing the root. - Cal ... Associate Professor, Centre for Criminal Justice Studies. Currently researching women and girls’ safety in urban parks and public spaces. Interested in making public space feel safe, convivial and inclusive.
Delighted to be invited to contribute to Leeds City Council's Scrutiny Board (Environment, Housing and Communities) this week, which included a report from the Chief Officer for Climate, Energy and Green Spaces setting out proposals to develop community park plans, including auditing parks’ accessibility with our Safer Parks Guidance and work to improve park design to ensure that women and girls feel safe and welcome. 👏 🔰 Community park plans on a page provide the opportunity for input and feedback from women and girls and give information about the park layout and facilities that can help develop familiarity and belonging to the space. ♿ Access audits of all Leeds parks, including how safe and welcoming they feel using our Safer Parks Guidance ❇ Testing new park designs embedding our Safer Parks Guidance – making Leeds a trailblazer! We know that changes to design and management are only part of the solution – that the women and girls we interviewed were clear that societal change is needed – but that these changes can play their part.
