Some observations as we celebrate Juneteenth: • Resilience and Perseverance: The enslaved people of America endured unimaginable hardship. Their long fight for freedom serves as a reminder of the strength and perseverance required to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of equality. • Delayed Justice is Not Denied Justice: While freedom came later for some than others, Juneteenth celebrates the ultimate triumph of justice. This reminds us that progress towards racial equity may be slow, but continued effort is essential. • The Importance of Community: Juneteenth is a community celebration, a time to come together and share stories. Similarly, fostering a strong sense of community among Black employees can provide support and encouragement. • Celebrating Milestones: Juneteenth serves as a reminder to celebrate progress, however big or small. Black employees can find motivation in acknowledging achievements, both personal and collective, on the path towards true equity.

What a wonderful way to kick off Black History Month - in Mississippi at an event and gathering with the Food Justice Collaborative. Love in full-on display! Sitting with the beautiful work of so many, including Cindy Ayers Elliott (Foot Print Farm and Farmers Hands Market) and these words from Dr. Mary Coleman (Senior Vice President and CEO of EMPath, a nonprofit that disrupts #poverty through direct services, advocacy, research, and a global learning network): “For me, the guard rail in conversations about economic mobility has everything to do with opportunity and everything to do with perception. How do we perceive ourselves and how do we perceive others? “If we perceive others as being unworthy, they don't get any resources. If others perceive themselves as being unworthy, they get fewer resources than they deserve And it happens all the time. So public policy is hugely important, because it can potentially self-correct some of that." Also these words of reflection on and guidance from “local people” of the Civil Rights Movement from Jackson-based historian and and activist Mr. Frank Figgers: “They did what they could, with what they had, where they were.” See more about the MS Food Justice Collaborative here (and zoom in on those core values in the graphic below) - https://msfoodjustice.ncat.organize
