Spent the majority of the weekend at Massachusetts Institute of Technology capturing media at the NEWMAC swimming and diving championships. I haven’t covered a multiday sports event before and it was an incredible opportunity to both track athletes progress but improve on media creation speed and upload flexibility. Congratulations to all the athletes from Clark University, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, US Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Babson College, and Wellesley College!

Here’s a little ice-breaker. Curling is Cool. Not the hair or eyelash kind (though, yes, it makes you look prettier sometimes)… I mean the large rock sliding and ice-sweeping kind. At least, that’s what Curling is Cool Day is about, an old Scottish game that’s a Canadian favourite at the Winter Olympics, and also right up there amongst Bruce Springsteen and George Clooney’s top-watched sports. Tentatively linked by closeness of spelling and Gaelic beginnings, any time I mention one of Ireland’s national sports, Hurling, I often get questioned as to whether it’s the weird Scottish ice shuffleboard and broomstick one… but it couldn’t be more different. As Jason Statham says in Blitz: "This, lads, is a hurley, used in the Irish game of hurling; a cross between hockey and murder". And seeing as I’m from Limerick, having suffered decades of torment in mediocrity, I currently revel in my hometown’s Man City-esque rise to the top of the pile, chasing an unprecedented five-in-a-row world championship rings. As good an advert for Irish manly excellence as any. Today in 1886, the first-ever classified advert was published in The Times in London. I mean, they call it the first-ever, but the Ancient Egyptians pipped the Brits to the post by about four millennia, creating public notice carvings as far back as 2000 BC. When I was growing up, classifieds were all about Desperately Seeking Susan (a Madonna film – not a cry for female attention), though if you look a little further back in the States, they were a great way of tracking down runaway slaves or far-reaching ransom notes. Both runaways and ransom-seekers could’ve benefited from playing Unesco-noted oldest and fastest field sport in the world (hurling), having begun as a Cú Chulainn hunting weapon as he slayed wild Irish wolves of mythology. I understand that you may be disappointed in curling not featuring more prominently in a Curling is Cool Day post… but, to be fair, it’s only cool in temperature, and hurling is much greater. #Curling #Hurling #Classifieds

The passing of the Every Child A Swimmer law in Florida in 2021 was a very positive step toward promoting water safety and the importance of learning to swim. It recognized the need to provide information to parents and improve access to swim lessons, particularly for families facing financial disadvantages. However, despite these efforts, Florida still faces a high number of unintentional drownings. Our work is still not done. Research has consistently shown that swimming lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, particularly among children aged 1 to 4. By implementing comprehensive water safety education and practical swimming skills, we can further protect our children and reduce the number of drownings. Help us spread the message with drowning prevention efforts in your areas and tag us with your next initiatives! #swimlessons #drownalliance #drowningprevention #watersafety #aquatics #watercompetency #safeswim

Generational beliefs, fears, and myths, combined with inequitable access to water resources and basic swim instruction, has left nearly 60% of Black and Brown children are unable to swim or uncomfortable in the deep end of the pool. Without the essential life skill of swimming, these children are 8 times greater risk of drowning. AquaMissions is determined to dispel the commonplace myths, fears and stereotypes about the dangers and inaccessibility of water and swimming and equip Black and LatinX children in Cleveland with access to life-saving water safety and swimming instruction. Following is a Policy Statement on the century-long problem of inequitable access to water resources and swim instruction for minorities, and recommendations to change the trajectory of water-related accidents and deaths among Black and Brown children in Cleveland.

The numbers aren't adding up for many swimming pools at the moment. The number of people coming through the door continues to drop, prices continue to rise, and many operators are caught between a rock and a hard place. Private swimming classes are not something that’s open and accessible to everybody, but at a time when the industry is struggling badly, doesn’t it make sense to diversify where we can? By using just a small portion of the pool for private classes, run by trained individuals working for themselves, operators can unlock a new, highly profitable income stream that can be used elsewhere. Speak to Swimming Nature about partnering today and rethink how you do business! #PoolProfitability #SwimmingIndustryChallenges #DiversifyAndThrive #SwimmingBusinessSolutions #PrivateSwimmingClasses #RevenueRevolution #BusinessInnovation #AquaticSuccess #PoolPartnerships #SwimmingNature #PoolDiversification #IndustryInsights #AquaticEntrepreneurship #BusinessRethink #ProfitablePools

Part of enjoying this long weekend may entail spending time on a boat, beach, or swimming at your local community pool. It is crucial that children and their families know how to be safe in or around bodies of water. Here are some water tips to ensure that your long weekend is full of safety and fun: - Wear a life jacket if you are on a boat, or swimming if you are not confident in your swimming abilities. - Never swim without an adult! It is important to make sure you have supervision while swimming. - Always go feet first into the water! By doing this you can decrease the risk of head injuries. - Use the buddy system while swimming. This not only ensures safe swimming, but its always more fun to enjoy time with friends and family!

Howard University's Swimming and Diving Team—the only all-Black swim team in the nation and last year's Men's Northeast Conference champions—are modeling excellence in a sport that, for generations, excluded Black Americans. Did you know that Black swimmers comprise only 2% of collegiate level swimmers and only 1.5% of the nearly 300,000 members of USA swimming? A historic and severe lack of access to swimming facilities and swim lessons—based on racial, geographic, and socioeconomic barriers—has led to this pervading gap. But a new generation of champions are rewriting #BlackHistory. Way to go Howard, as well as the many organizations, like the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance's Step Into Swim, Diversity In Aquatics, and Black People Will Swim that are redefining representation in swimming and promoting enthusiasm for swimming and water safety nationwide.

[Implications of longer lives] We are seeing populations live longer and it has implications for businesses, the economy, pensions, society and for us as individuals. You can check the "Longevity Dividend" presentation I delivered on this topic to the US. Federal Foresight Community of Interest (link in comments) This topic of longer lives continues to fascinate me and I started an interview series to capture people's healthy aging protocols. In essence it's capturing people's way of living life. You can find out more at Project Nof1 🤸 #longevity #healthspan #lifespan
She started swimming at age 66. 33 years later, she’s won hundreds of medals and broken three world records in her age group. “The pool is my happy place,” says 99-year-old Betty Brussel. One of 12 children, she grew up in the Netherlands and wasn’t able to pursue any extracurricular activities until she retired in 1982. She began swimming and entered her first competition in 1991. As for her longevity, she credits maintaining an active lifestyle, being a happy person, and simply “doing stuff.” So there you have it: You’re not too old, and it’s not too late.

Over the weekend, Owen Lloyd achieved a personal best and won a conference championship in swimming. However, moments after the race, he was disqualified for breaking a rule designed to prevent swimmers from interfering with one another mid-race. Although Owen violated the letter of the rule by hopping on the lane line and hugging his friend, the intent of the rule was not violated. Despite this, the officiating crew chose to enforce the rule to its letter, resulting in Owen's disqualification. This story highlights a few takeaways that we can all learn from. First, winning and recognition are two separate things. Second, harsh letter-of-the-law application is often not optimal and can even be lazy. Finally, rules are only as useful as their intended outcomes are understood. What do you think about this story? Do you believe Owen should have been disqualified or not? Let us know in the comments!
