Local Economic Development- I am pro-business and supportive of local economic development. I support the streamlining of commercial building development and business permits to cut down on the time it takes to open a business in Gilroy. If a business meets all the objective standards established by the Gilroy City Council, then the application shall be deemed complete in 30 days, which enhances our local control. After completion of the building checklist, the business should be allowed to open, and not prevented from opening their doors based on subjective findings. I voted to fund many of our specific plans, including the Downtown Specific Plan. When plans are updated every 5 years, they stimulate the local economy by keeping up with current demands. When we provide a quality education for all, high quality of life, and develop beautification projects, it will attract businesses and jobs to Gilroy. When we remove barriers to opening businesses quickly, then local jobs of all incomes will be more readily available. Everyone should have access to jobs that pay a living wage, and the ability to expand their skills. Very encouraging. In that same time we, as a smallish architects practice, delivered 496 houses and apartments on 17 sites across Bristol. There are so many small and medium sized brownfield sites and redundant buildings that are ideal for redevelopment for housing. They can be delivered quickly by local companies using local employees and suppliers. They can even be developments that potential residents are already lined up for and enthusiastic about. Regrettably, these are the ones that seem to take an inordinate amount of time, effort and negative pushback as they endeavour to get through the planning system in Bristol. 🏆 The NSW Favourite Place results are in! 🏆 Lackey Street, Summer Hill, was voted NSW’s favourite High Street 🎉 Lackey Street is a delightful mix of heritage buildings, neighbourhood shops, a corner pub, civic activities and open space. “Lackey Street is a pedestrian friendly place where crossing the street is easy due to little through traffic,” according to urban designer, UDA member and long-time resident Russell Olsson. “Street trees, kerbside planting and painted murals show community pride in a well-loved place.” 1,300 votes for cast and the top 3 streets were: 🥇 Lackey Street, Summer Hill - 15.5%  🥈 King Street, Newtown - 12.9%  🥉 Majors Bay Road, Concord - 12.7% All the finalists were high streets that evolved on an original tram route or near a train station, starting from urbanisation in the late 1800s. High streets built to serve Sydney’s original walkable neighbourhoods have clearly retained their appeal. 🚶♀️🚶 With this poll, we aimed to spark a public conversation on the types of high streets that people value. How can we protect and enhance these streets as places of economic activity and social interaction?❔

12th Tallest City in America? THE CITY IS GROWING! But... what about it? 📈 📈 The construction of tall buildings can have various implications for a city. On the positive side, it can signify economic prosperity, job opportunities in the construction and real estate sectors, and a vibrant urban environment with a mix of residential and commercial spaces. It can ALSO offer iconic landmarks that contribute to the city's identity. BUT, there can be challenges associated with tall buildings, such as concerns about urban density, infrastructure needs, TRAFFIC congestion, and the impact on local neighborhoods and communities. City planners and officials need to carefully consider these factors to ensure that the development of tall buildings enhances the overall quality of life for residents and visitors. In general, the ranking of Jersey City as the 12th "tallest" city in America suggests that it is undergoing significant urban development and growth, which can have both positive and negative aspects, depending on how it is managed and planned.... https://lnkd.in/e4eE7Yeu

It's another lovely day in Mayport! Special Meeting Update: Concerns have been circulating in the form of two different letters regarding the lighthouse and other topics. Here are the facts about MWP’s connection to the lighthouse as presented by MWP board member Bill Gulliford: Let’s talk about the rumor that moving the St. Johns Lighthouse is imminent. Here are excerpts from a letter that was circulated recently. “Information has reached me that there are plans afoot to move the St. Johns lighthouse and that someone from the Partnership has already met with the Navy and a contractor about moving the lighthouse…to my knowledge those plans were ever publicly discussed or voted on by members of the partnership at a public meeting”. Now here are the facts. In 2001 there was a bid of $600K+ to move the lighthouse and I received a copy of that bid when I was on the council I announced at a recent Partnership board meeting I was going to investigate, with the people who provided that original bid, as to what it might cost now to move it now, which I did. They came back with a cost of $11,000. to develop a quotation and specific plan to move it. Beyond that there has been little activity regarding moving the lighthouse and no formal endorsement to do the same from the Partnership. So here is what it would take to move the lighthouse: 1. $11,000. To develop a plan and overall cost to move it. 2. Permission from the Navy to move it off their property. 3. Addressing the issue of potentially disturbing the burials around the vicinity of the lighthouse 4. Permission from the Navy to waive the 50+ foot height restriction agreed upon by the City of Jacksonville for any new location for the lighthouse. 5. Permission and legislation by the City of Jacksonville to site it on a parcel on the riverfront. 6. Finding a source of what would probably be a cost of $2M or more to move it. As you can see, the rumor that moving the lighthouse is imminent ranks right up there with Bigfoot being spotted at Singleton’s eating lunch. What do you think about Mayor Whitmire’s plans? In my opinion, Houston is ready to compete and diviserfy itself in order to do so. There are many other factors that would need to be explored and further improved (such as additional security, funding, mass transit, high end hotels) in order to make this happen. Every city across the nation needs improvement to continue to better the visitors and pedestrian experience and this experience is ever changing.
