Thank you #BarrFoundation for articulating this powerful, student-centered strategy to achieve school transformation. If your reform, improvement, or justice-seeking efforts in secondary education are NOT centering student voice, I just don't think you can get there from here. If we want students to collaborate with us, we gotta collaborate with them, seek their insight, gain their trust, and work together. At issue isn't whether students can rise to the challenge; it's we adults who need to step up and partner with kids like we mean it. A good example here: https://lnkd.in/daxyXWmt.
When students and adults work together to co-create excellent, equitable high school experiences, students are better able to reach their goals. In this blog, Education Program Officer Alison Gross describes how Barr grantees are leading efforts to position student experiences, perspectives, and ideas as a north star for decision-making.

This week school districts in Massachusetts and throughout New England welcome back educators and support staff for the start of a new school year. It will be a week full of amazing activity – new teacher orientations, convocations, professional development, and last minute building and classroom preparations. From shiny floors, to shrink wrapped instructional materials – a feeling of newness and potential fills the air. As we move beyond the “post-COVID” moniker, we are filled with hope for the year ahead. Let’s remember that in these first few days together it’s not about inspirational welcome speeches, insightful training, or interactive icebreakers. It’s about connection. Genuine human connection. That is the heart of our recovery. Our resilience is rooted in human connection. Did you know that the most magnificent and majestic trees, the mighty Redwoods, have roots that are less than 10 feet deep? Though they stand up to 350 feet tall, they withstand the forces of nature by extending their shallow roots outward, by as much as 100 feet, intertwining with the roots of the trees around them. Those strong connections are what provide them with support and stability. So, let’s remember that it’s not really about content, concepts, comprehension, or – dare I say it – curriculum! It’s about creating opportunities for meaningful, deep, human connection. Through collaboration, celebration, and authentic communication – let’s remember to help staff extend and intertwine those relationship roots so they can start the year strong, safe and secure.

“Attendance awards are not effective in motivating students to go to school—some even call the practice outdated—and are not equitable to students of all backgrounds.” Tying school activities to school attendance will not reach all students who are not attending. Think about it - if a student is disengaged and not attending, will they really care if they miss a dance? Wouldn’t a conversation(s) with the student and family be more effective? Find out what the barrier is and how to overcome that barrier. Definitely something to think about. https://lnkd.in/g3aEPYYb.
