Helping LGBTQ+ Individuals and Families See Themselves at the Center of Their Financial Story | gillilandfinance.com
These statistics speak volumes and point to the work our industry *must* continue to do globally to step into a healthier, sustainable and truly inclusive way of being. Some initial thoughts for others in our industry that I’d love to continue a dialogue on: 1. Ask (with consent and support) your queer advisors - What is working (and not) with the way we are conducting business right now? What language and practices are moving your queer clients, prospects, etc. away from their own sense of financial development and growth - and what is bringing them closer? 2. Acknowledge harm historically done. Recognize that this industry is a wildly imperfect one, and that harm that has historically been caused by the industry has most impacted those most marginalized in our society. 3. Remember the emotional reality of what we do. It’s intimate work, allowing such important aspects of yourself and your life to be seen in the client-advisor relationship. As an advisor and leader, develop emotional maturity and emotional honesty for the times when both parties are entering into unknowns, and certainly do not put the emotional labor of explaining queerness or any marginal identity on a client. 4. Be wary of how you sell freedom to the queer community. So much of our business is predicated on the notion of reaching financial freedom, which I would argue is essential to living well, however, it is so vital that advisors learn to name the freedom and liberated state queer folx already are creating for themselves every day. Financial freedom is a beautiful byproduct of strategizing, intentionality arising from clear goals and a nurtured internal abundance. Honor how the queer community creates that internal abundance for themselves before they come into a meeting in your office - far outside the lens of the cisheteronormative. 5. Continue to work to get it right instead of be right. I always go back to this Brené Brown quote when it comes to any liberatory work I’m working to do. “I am here to get it right, not to be right.” Recognize how long this industry has relied on the black and white, the right and wrong, and the should and shouldn’t. There is space here for us to continue to work to get it right, rather than *be* right. These thoughts are in no way comprehensive - Let’s continue a dialogue here! I’d love to hear your thoughts!!
