What a nine months at NatWest Group it has been! When I moved back to the motherland earlier this year, one of the things I was excited about (in addition to Italian beaches!) was to work for an organisation that was further along in climate transition planning and the subsequent disclosures than some in Aotearoa, NZ. And today we launch the NatWest Group 2023 Climate-related Disclosures Report, which includes key developments against our Climate transition plan! This document is 12 months in the making, but genuinely so much more than a disclosure. Some highlights from the last 9 months developing this beautiful beast: - Firstly, seeing how deeply the climate change agenda is embedded and integrated into the NatWest business. From the abundance of employees across the organisation, to its approach to climate risk management, scenario analysis, and climate transition planning, amongst so much more. In some cases it is a part of, or becoming a part of, how the bank operates. - Understanding how crucial it is to adopt a systems thinking approach for the successful decarbonisation of the economy. Both taking into account the movement of carbon between sectors and acknowledge the complexities and dependencies of these relationships. How we transparent disclosure is also becoming more critical! -Learning more about the UK political landscape, and understanding the dependencies banks and our customers have on timely government policy and technological innovation. - Seeing the maturity of in-house climate scenario analysis programmes used to test the resilience of corporate strategy, and understanding the necessities of building this in-house capability and supporting infrastructure. - And in turn the challenge that remains with the availability of supporting accurate and reliable climate data. And of course, it has been a huge reminder of how critical, yet ginormous beasts, CRD documents are. 😊 A big thank you to my team, and all involved. A huge learning curve - bring on 2024!
