📌Not to be missed! 📅Join us tomorrow at 9 am EDT/3 pm CAT as we discuss findings from a groundbreaking study on NASG use in Zambia. The Non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is a lightweight, washable, reusable, and affordable lifesaving first aid device for women suffering from heavy blood loss following childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage). When a woman undergoes post-partum hemorrhage, she can die from shock within two hours. The NASG can be used to control bleeding, reverse shock, and temporarily stabilize the patient, allowing time (up to 36 hours) for her to be transported to a health facility for proper care. CHAI and the Ministry of Health, Zambia, conducted a large-scale, first-of-its-kind study on the use of the NASG across 143 public health facilities in Zambia. After 16 months of introducing the device, nearly all facilities use and have functional NASGs. Join us tomorrow at 9 am EDT/3 pm as we discuss the results of the study. This webinar is organized by the Maternal Health Supplies Caucus of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition. ✍️Register: https://ow.ly/ZqCF50Src02 #MaternalHealth #ChildHealth

https://lnkd.in/dUAj7FQv Snakebites are a public health problem. Each year, snakebites occur in approximately 5 million people worldwide, causing about 125,000 deaths and 400,000 disabilities annually. In tropical climates such as sub-Saharan Africa, the burden is substantial, with about 20,000 deaths annually. Snakebite is a neglected NTD. Availability and affordability of antivenom is still an big problem in most sub Saharan Africa where a vial of snake antivenom may go up to 100USD - 200USD when available. We recently published a paper on Real life condition evaluation of Inoserp PAN-AFRICA antivenom effectiveness in Cameroon which showed good effectiveness of the Inoserp Pan African Antivenom. https://lnkd.in/dfjhX264 Today we are happy to have published the first clinical case in thé #TheNewEnglandJournalofMedicine as a special feature for the 100-year anniversary of the Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital. This case reports a peculiar case of bleeding in a pregnant woman following a snakebite and highlights the management dilemma involved in snakebite envenomation in LMICs. https://lnkd.in/dUAj7FQv #snakebites #neglectedtropicaldisease #NTDs #onehealth #maternalmortality Yap Boum II Linda Esso

Today, 23rd May on the "International Day to End Obstetric Fistula" , let's raise awareness about this devastating childbirth injury that affects millions of women worldwide, especially in low-resource setting. Obstetric fistula is a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without access to timely medical treatment. It leads to chronic incontinence, infections, and social isolation. An estimated 2 million women live with obstetric fistula, with 100,000 new cases occurring each year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. This preventable condition is a human rights issue, denying women the right to health and dignity. Access to quality maternal healthcare, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric care can prevent and treat obstetric fistula. On this day, let's amplify the call for intensified resource mobilization, community engagement, and advocacy for universal access to sexual and reproductive health services to end fistula within a generation. Together, we can ensure every woman has access to quality maternal healthcare and lives a life of dignity. #EndObstetricFistula, #MaternalHealth, #IDEOF

"How was the Eclipse on your side of the globe? Welcome to Week 2 of RI’s Month of Maternal and Child Health. No country has greater instances of maternal death than Nigeria. In 2020, 82,000 pregnant women and new mothers died there, nearly four times the maternal fatalities in India, where the second-most deaths occur. One contributing factor? Sixty percent of births in Nigeria take place outside of a health center or hospital, meaning mothers and expectant mothers are far more vulnerable if complications arise. And they so often do: The top causes of maternal deaths include postpartum hemorrhage, obstructed labor, and eclampsia, when seizures develop from a complication that can cause high blood pressure and organ damage. “Most people view [the deaths] as a punishment from the gods or some kind of witchcraft,” says midwife Ashezi David Alu. “But it’s just a pure act of negligence because of poor management of those complications.” Now a $2 million Programs of Scale grant from The Rotary Foundation is addressing this problem head on. Its goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by 25 percent in target areas at the end of the three-year program. Known as Together for Healthy Families in Nigeria, the initiative is sponsored by Rotary District 1860 (Germany) in partnership with Districts 9110, 9125, 9141, and 9142 (Nigeria), as well as the Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal, and Child Health. Unfolding in targeted areas within three Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory, the initiative builds on previous work by Rotary members in the country. It’s hoped that, once the program demonstrates its effectiveness, it will be replicated across Nigeria and elsewhere. Critically, Rotary members are partnering with federal and state agencies in implementing the program to ensure the intervention and its benefits last far longer than the three years of the grant cycle. “This project is going to birth more projects,” insists Toyosi Adebambo, the program’s manager." - Submitted by: Christopher W Knapp, District 6000 Foundation Chair #rotaryinternational #Rotary #ServiceAboveSelf #Maternal #ChildHealth

It’s hard not to get excited about improving maternal mortality! That’s why I'm particularly proud and excited to have co-authored this new publication: Community Participation for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn And Child Health: Insights From The Design And Implementation Of The Bornfyne-Prenatal Management System Digital Platform In Cameroon. Key takeaways: ☑Issues around male involvement in the program, sensitization and equity concerns arose. ☑ Emergent challenges and proposed strategies for implementation from diverse stakeholders evidently enriched the design and implementation process of the project intervention. ☑Stakeholder meetings informed the addition of variables on the mobile application that were otherwise initially omitted, which will further enhance the RMNCH electronic data collection for health information systems strengthening in Cameroon. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dxFdk_BV

In fragile settings, contraception and other essential health commodities used to treat childhood illness and ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries are often in short supply—putting the health of mothers and children at risk. Supply chains are one of the first systems to break down in times of crisis. A recent report from MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience reviews evidence on stock-outs in fragile settings from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Sudan, and Tanzania. Recognizing the need for locally tailored solutions in each country, the report calls for countries with fragile settings to have harmonized emergency guidelines and procedures that can provide health workers detailed guidance when shortages are anticipated. In addition, health workers need to be fully trained in supply chain best practices and supported with adequate funding. Pathfinder is a proud MOMENTUM partner, and we are sharing our report here: https://lnkd.in/eAT82aNk Pictured: Health consultations with mothers and children by a mobile clinic team in Zinder, Niger, a region plagued by prolonged droughts and periods of torrential rain.

Corus organization IMA World Health leads MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience to improve access to and availability of high-quality, person-centered health care in fragile and conflict-affected settings. 💉 The USAID-funded project is advancing maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), voluntary family planning (FP), and reproductive health (RH) care across the globe, including in the Sahel region of Africa. Continued insecurity in the region has made it challenging to provide critical social services such as health care and education. The project supports district governments to adapt to and recover from health system shocks and stresses while strengthening coordination with civil society partners.
