Ask these in your next sales call When’s the last time you closed a sponsor? A lot of sponsorship-seekers are just kind of feeling their way around blindly when it comes to marketing and sales. If a sponsor falls in their lap, great. If a sponsor DOESN’T fall in their lap… they have no idea how to go out and get one. So they feel like they’ve been trying for years and nothing is working (which is true). Or they feel like, if they don’t make something happen RIGHT NOW, they’ll have to give up on the business. (Which also might be true). If that’s you, then I want to let you in on a bit of our discovery process. If you gather the RIGHT information, you’ll be at an ADVANTAGE when it comes time to connect with decision makers and close the deal. Ask these 5 questions the next time you talk to a potential sponsor: 1. “Who is your target audience?” 2. “What action do your customers take right before they make a purchase? And how do you typically get them to take that action?” 3. “Tell me about a sponsorship agreement that went badly and why. What made it not produce a return on investment?” <— this is my favorite because the answer will tell you SO MUCH about what NOT to do. 4. “What can you tell me about your sales goals for the coming year?” 5. "What do you consider to be the most important elements of a sponsorship package and what should I avoid?" I’m sure you can see how the answers will tell you 80% or more of what you need to include in a package to close your sponsor.
