Mr PRS Oberoi - Building the Best - 30 years ahead of time. My tribute to him in Business Today. Where do you even begin when talking about a living legend? I had the good fortune of working for Mr PRS Oberoi directly for over 14 years and what an education it was. Enough has been said about his attention to detail, his guest focus and his life as a legendary hotelier. This tribute is about his risk taking ability & his focus on building the best in India. Imagine an India, 30 years back and the resolve of a hotelier to say, that we will build the best hotels in the world here. For us to make that comment now is easy. 30 years back, the airports in Jaipur and Udaipur were practically non existent and the roads in poor condition- how does one build the best hotels in the world in these destinations? How do you build a world class product when even iconic palaces were selling at less than $100 a night? That is why they are legends- visionaries beyond their time, and that for the Indian hotel business was Mr Oberoi. He believed in the India story much before anyone else did. He was confident that Indian hotels could be the best in the world both from a product and service perspective. A new team was assembled to launch these hotels and his son Vikram was the first GM of The Oberoi Rajvilas. Today, the Oberoi Resorts have not only brought fame and acclaim to the brand and the country but are the most profitable hotels per room in India. Great projects take half a lifetime but his faith and commitment in creating the best hotels never waned. Arjun, the current Chairman, was involved in building them with him and Vikram in running them. That lead from the front ability irrespective of being in his late 80’s was always there. He wept when he took a round of The Oberoi Mumbai post the terror attacks, the hotel was destroyed, & so many team members and guests lost their lives. He took care of everything and started planning the rebuild. His response to the terror attack was that The Oberoi, Mumbai will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes and he will create the best city hotel in the world to show the world that we will not be cowed down. His risk taking ability, was again at the forefront while renovating The Oberoi, New Delhi. He believed it was an icon in the city but 50 years since its opening, was looking a bit tired. The consensus was that it was too much of a risk to shut it down completely, and that a part renovation would protect profits of the most profitable hotel in the company. He was clear, there are no short cuts or compromises to success. The Oberoi, New Delhi was to be his last masterpiece as it was the first luxury hotel that opened in 1965. Maybe a tribute from him to his legendary father & a reminder to every Indian of his everlasting legacy in the heart of Delhi. Travel well and rest in peace, Sir. https://lnkd.in/dPnJzMYN

Digital explorer and design thinker, anthropologist and semiotician at heart, decoding the interplay of business, technology and society, navigating the evolving intersection of content, commerce & communities
Hotels are fascinating, intricate machines. They are among the unique constructs where humans, with their idiosyncrasies, are as much of vital cogs that run the whole thing as the actual metal and concrete nuts and bolts that make up the whole edifice. Hotels are paradoxically about authentic human touch provided by humans working in perfect synchronicity like a well-oiled machine, tasked with providing an experience of luxury that comes from attention to detail and not missing a beat at all, all the time. That's why expert hoteliers are generally masters of running things like a consummate conductor of an orchestra, and great hoteliers create symphonies of indelible experiences. PRS aka Biki Oberoi was just such a great hotelier. An inheritor of great legacy, Biki Oberoi was that rare entrepreneur who built on that foundation to create something even greater, establishing Oberoi as the synonym for global luxury melded with the ageless traditions of India. Mr. Oberoi (along with his equally laudable peers, The Taj Group from Tata) was among the original 'Make in India' pioneers, with a seemingly insurmountable challenge that was met with aplomb and elan - this tribe thought global even while making in India, built a brand and product for the world in the most demanding industry where you don't have the luxury (pun not intended) of being merely good enough and established Indian hospitality in the firmament of the very best. Mr. Oberoi was legendary for his attention to detail. In his own words, “You can make a hotel of pure gold, but no-one will visit unless you provide quality service”. And he lived his own dictum - his hotels were of pure gold (metaphorically and otherwise) AND became the by-word for quality and service excellence. An interesting anecdote (from Business Standard 's appraisal) illustrates Biki Oberoi's legendary attention to detail - "He would wear an oversized ring on his index finger to get a sense of the precise gap between the door and its handle. His careful scrutiny was meant to ensure that only those handles were in place that could prevent guests wearing elaborate rings from leaving scratches on the doors of his beloved hotel." Call it being hands-on or literally having your finger on the pulse of things, but it sets a bar of hard work, being on the ground and management-by-walking-around that every entrepreneur, manager and leader should emulate. Biki Oberoi will be an 'Indian' entrepreneur and businessperson for the ages. R.I.P. P.S. Hiring tip - hire a decent hotel management graduate or a manager from a hotel, and you will rarely go wrong, because of the versatility, attention to detail and ability to work under pressure, which come with the landscape. #leadership #humancentred #quality #excellence #management #makeinindia #hospitality #oberoihotels #hotels #entrepreneurship

"I say a hotel is only for leisure. Nobody comes to do business in a hotel. How to give an elevated level of comfort – that is the same in a resort and a leisure hotel. The science has not changed, the art is different. We know the science. We will adjust the art depending on the location". . With those words by Salil Panigrahi, Managing Director of Atmosphere Core, anyone still unfamiliar with Atmosphere Hotels or their brands - Ozen, Oblu etc - well that situation is about to change. The Maldives based hospitality group plans to have 25 signed hotels by 2025, a significant number of which will be open by then. Starting with their luxury hotel in Kolkata - an unusual choice but the group plans to focus on east India first, they promise to bring a differentiated product to the India market, focused on relaxation - for BUSINESS INDIA . #atmospherehotels Atmosphere Hotels #ozen #atmospherecore #hotels #hospitality #hotel #kolkata #luxury #wellness

India's hotel industry witnessed contrasting trends in Q2: while ADR rose between 16%-18%, occupancy declined by 1-3%. Metro cities like New Delhi and Mumbai observed up to a 5% growth in room occupancy, but cities such as Pune and Bengaluru experienced significant dips. In 2023, approximately 5,900 hotel rooms were launched across 84 properties, with an additional 12,500 rooms signed for about 142 hotels. https://hubs.li/Q01-rCNq0

Digital & Marketing Advisor I Brand doctor | Founder/Chief Thinker: AI 3.60 Impact Solutions I 30+ years cross-sector experience l FMCG, Retail, Ecommerce, Hospitality, Healthcare, IT, B2B & more I I help brands grow
On Oberoi Hotels & Resorts planning to go big by going small. Having worked with a pioneer of small (& sustainable) hotels in an advisory capacity for almost a decade, I know how exciting a space it is. Customer preferences too seem to be shifting to smaller, more intimate hotels from the something-for-everyone hotels. Covid and the scare around being with strangers in crowded places (and hotels) seems to have accelerated this change in customer preferences and hotel chains seem to be responding too. The Postcard Hotel chain was born of an idea to create bespoke, intimate luxury stay experiences for discerning and well-heeled guests. Its birth around the time of Covid helped it gain customer traction quickly and that's helped fuel its growth and attract others to emulate its model. The Taj too has focused on expanding its footprint of luxury homestays, villas and bungalows via its Ama Trails & Stays brand, and just celebrated opening its 100th villa. Clearly, going big on going small is good for business. What kind of hotel / stay experiences do you prefer when you travel on holiday?
