Computer science skills are more than “just coding.” The computational thinking approach encourages students to make connections between specific solutions and generalizing it for new problems. I had various conversations with students this week and a recurring theme for engineering and computer science students is imposter syndrome and the various ways that shows up: ▪️comparing a weighted high school GPA of 4.5 to an intensely challenging engineering or computer science college curriculum that results in a lower GPA (again in a more challenging curriculum) ▪️not recognizing the transferable skills they bring to the table outside of academic skills ▪️being uncomfortable following their own instincts because they don’t want to say “no” to someone or let someone they respect down ▪️thinking they can’t ask for help (because they see others not needing help) or ask questions (because they think everyone else already has this figured out). I’m sharing this reminder (about the awards you don’t need to keep trying to win) first with the amazing group of engineering and computer science students I’m connected to on this platform, and second with everyone else I’m connected to because it can’t hurt to show yourself grace. You can still have high aspirations and work towards important goals, but take a look at this list and be kind to yourself.
