Shortest distances along given paths: Many insights could be gained by examining not just the data itself but also its spatial distribution. After all, Tobler‘s 1st law of geography states: "Everything is related to everything else and nearer things are more related than things further away", as I learnt in the Spatial Data Analysis in R course by the always brilliant Kathrine von Graevenitz. As part of our final project for this course, Yannis Wittig and I needed to find the shortest distances between two sets of locations. This could be easily achieved by using the coordinates to calculate Euclidean distances between all locations, and then choose the shortest distance and iterate for each location. However, unlike birds, humans don't travel on a straight line through the sky (mostly), rather we travel from one point to the next on roads or railways, i.e., on specific paths. In the attached document, we show how to do a shortest distance analysis and extract these paths using real life geographical data via the free and open source software #QGIS. We also show how you can obtain from simplified to very detailed street and administrative boundaries data for most of Europe for free.
