Pros and cons of a Tech Sales Career On its face, tech sales is an appealing career path: Done well, you make a lot of tech money fast. → That said, it isn’t a career for everyone. For one, tech sales are hard. This isn’t a cushy job, and it pays well because it’s difficult, both in time commitment and skill. The looming specter of quota means you may be pulling weeks well over 40 hours when it’s crunch time. But if you can handle the high pressure, you’ll find yourself in an industry built on camaraderie where you can earn more than some programmers could dream of. Here are some other pros and cons to consider Pros: Opportunities for remote work. Significant upward mobility. Exciting and dynamic field. High earning potential. Cons: Possible termination for not meeting quotas. Encounter rudeness or harsh feedback from prospects. However, I'm big on betting on people and candidates are also looking to make a bet on the company they work for, their manager, the team, the product, etc. We get it. We've got the playbook, the partnerships, the product fit. But we're not looking for someone to just pick up the old playbook and run. You should only hire a sales team once you've tested, proven, and documented an entire sales engine... From sales goals, - target prospects, - lead generation strategies and sequences, - talk tracks, - sales meeting guidelines, - workflows and best practices, - and a smooth sales tech experience. Sales teams are for scaling revenue...not proving systems. The only (smart) founders who use new sales reps to prove sales systems expect to burn some cash to make it happen. If you're looking to hire a genuine sales pro into your team... - Hire for their intelligence and empathy, not for a degree. These qualities are more important than formal education when it comes to building strong relationships with clients and closing deals. - Hire for sales skills over industry experience. A top sales pro will usually adapt to a new industry and outperform someone with industry-specific knowledge but less sales talent. - Hire for core attributes, rather than technical knowledge. Things like communication and listening skills, empathy, and tenacity can be more valuable than specific technical skills. - Hire for drive and energy over age. Age or years of experience don't necessarily determine success in sales. Instead, look for candidates with a strong work ethic, a drive for results and passion for the job. Remember, in a competitive market, hiring the right sales professional can make all the difference to your company's success and growth.
