Juneteenth, officially named Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is observed annually on June 19 to commemorate the abolition of slavery in the United States. This occurred on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1866. Initially centered on church-centered gatherings in Texas, it spread across the South among newly freed African American slaves and their descendants. The Great Migration brought these celebrations to the rest of the country, and since 1979, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia has recognized the holiday. ➡ Learn more about today and how you can celebrate:https://lnkd.in/gnwUyEcn #juneteenth #JuneteenthNationalIndependenceDay
