Hi all. I'm not going to be publishing my first column for the year on my Substack, Just the Business, until Tuesday, Jan 30. However, I have posted a comment this morning on a controversy that has blown up over the holiday period about Substack itself and its policy on what material is acceptable on its platform. The headline does give away my position: Just the Business won't side with censorship and you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gwYh3CxA

Reddit pulled off one of the greatest slam dunks on a hater of all time. —— In 2005, Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian Sr., found himself in a room with Yahoo executives, expecting an M&A discussion. At this time, Reddit was a small fish compared to Yahoo. In the conversation, Ohanian was surprised to hear an executive refer to Reddit as a “rounding error” compared to Yahoo and went so far as to question why he was even in the room. Rather than letting it defeat him, Ohanian printed this quote and kept it on his desk, serving as a reminder to prove this guy wrong. Reddit would go on to become a huge success. Today, Reddit is worth around $5.5 billion and Yahoo… only $1.6 billion. A few takeaways: Turn a hater into your biggest motivator for success. Use their negativity as fuel for your fire and prove them wrong. Don’t let one piece of bad advice kill your spirit. Not everyone who has an opinion, has one that matters. Lastly, just because you’re small and someone else is big doesn’t make them right. There are plenty of successful folks out there with blind spots and bad opinions. — Like this post?
