According to a new report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 2022, the SPM child poverty rate jumped to 12%, more than double the 2021 rate. This means that more than 9 million kids in the US are in need of basic resources like food, housing, and utilities. The Unstoppable Force of Nonprofits in Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1 (Ending Poverty) In our quest to create a better world for all, one of the most pressing challenges we face is eradicating poverty. It was a privilege to speak alongside Graeme Duncan from Right to Succeed, Ed Vainker from Reach Foundation and Carol Homden from Coram at the launch of New Philanthropy Capital’s and Ethos Foundations’ report Closing the Gap: Building better child poverty prevention systems. I have come away inspired by the way fellow travellers are delivering systems change by putting communities at the forefront and enabling them to take the lead. As Grant Gordon concluded, we need to give agency to communities: It takes communities to raise the next generation. It is time for a systemic and holistic approach to tackle child poverty which puts parents and children at the heart of everything we do.   As the report says, "the strategies and approaches that are needed are joined-up, multi-faceted and multi-agency at both and national and local level”.   We were delighted that Thrive at Five was highlighted in "Closing The Gap" as an organisation taking this systematic approach and investing in coordination to strengthen the system. Thrive at Five work collectively to unite and improve local systems and services, strengthening networks of support around children and families and engaging parents and carers to ensure they are at the heart of shaping and delivering solutions. Access to menstrual products, safe, hygienic spaces in which to use them, and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma, is essential for every girl but for many girls who can't access period products and education, it has created risks when it comes to girls' education, well-being, and sometimes entire lives are affected. During the last two weeks, MinnCAP network Community Action Agencies Northwest Community Action, PRAIRIE FIVE COMMUNITY ACTION COUNC IL and United Community Action Partnership, Inc. held poverty simulations. The events emulated the challenges and choices households with low incomes or living in #poverty face. It's not a game. It's a reality all too often present in the lives of Community Action clients. The simulation brings awareness to individuals, community members and organizations about families' struggles that aren't always discussed. Painful to read this article in NY Times-Breaking News though its findings are sadly not surprising. This rate of #childpoverty is unacceptable. We all have to do better, give a little more and support causes that address this problem. Please make sure you read the whole story especially the last few paragraphs that suggest smart #publicpolicy, #zoning and #publicfinance actions that should be enacted immediately to quickly reduce the rate of child poverty. I also think that we should increase funding (public and private) to the 46 Settlement Houses which are community-based #socialservice organizations on the frontlines.  Having worked with them in the past and seen their effectiveness and brilliance, it is one of the best investments we can make.
