👀 🎥 Watch this video from my recent visit to Traverse Academy in Aurora, CO – a new model for youth mental health services built by the Cherry Creek School District at a time of great need. I am blown away by the critical work happening at this first-of-its-kind mental health day facility for students in crisis. I was there on behalf of the Tuchman Family Foundation, which donated 200 “Welcome” kits for Traverse’s new students and “Launch” bags for those ready to transition back to their home schools. Each bag was filled with tools selected by Traverse staff – calming fidget toys, sensory objects for mindfulness, and much more.
It is incredible, with the urgent need for youth mental health services, that we finally have a model program I hope can be adopted throughout the U.S. While at Traverse, I got to see what makes this program stand out:
💡 Holistic, individualized care: Social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and educators invested in each student’s growth. Congratulations to Traverse Principal Kim Avalos on putting together such a talented, passionate team.
💡 Innovative solution: Supported by local taxpayers who approved funding for the building, Cherry Creek School District implemented a vision to provide much-needed mental health services. The district is partnering with the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
💡Welcoming, intentional design: Calming colors, natural light, comfortable couches and nooks, a bouldering wall and walking labyrinth.
This model could save lives. As Kim says on the video “I don't know what better message you could give a child than “I believe in you. I believe in your wellness.” Let’s show all our children and teens that they matter by providing access to innovative mental health care.
