"Specialists need to have general knowledge" NO 🛑 They do not I'm getting tired of people thinking everyone needs to know something about everything, this is NOT the case! You don't hire a software engineer 👨💻 to know about commercial law, so why would you care if that software engineer has no idea about law? Specialists provide value to the marketplace by being extremely good at one thing 🎯 . What do you think? Let me know below

Calling senior software engineers and managers of software engineers! How do you run your 1:1 meetings with your nerds? 🤔 🤓 I'm wondering what other folk have found works well for keeping team members on-track and focussed, especially over a long period of time (such as... idk, a career). The handful of things I've read at stupid-o'-clock today for a fortnightly check-in have mostly suggested the obvious things, like these: • What went well? • What went not-so-well? • What's up next? • What can I help with? While these are all perfectly reasonable questions... I feel there's got to be a more productive way to discuss the direction of your developers - as both an employee of the company, and as someone with career goals. What secrets lie at the heart of a great one-to-one? #SoftwareEngineers #SoftwareEngineering #SoftwareDevelopers #EngineeringManagers #ManagingEngineers #SeniorEngineers #SeniorSoftwareEngineers

HARD-TECH COMPANIES: I hear your biggest problem is hiring excellent software engineers to power your hardware. You're not alone. Companies just like you are struggling to hire experienced talent, and they ship terrible software hoping time will solve their problems. But I'm here to tell you that it's possible to build a culture that develops less experienced engineers to write excellent software for safety-critical systems. I know it's possible because I've just finished teaching my first course to a company's team of more junior software engineers, and I showed them what it looks like to be excellent. I believe that building a culture of developing teams that build high-quality software for hard-tech is one of the highest-leverage ways we can work to increase humanity's rate of solving hard problems like climate change, aerospace, health care, transportation, and more. So if you're struggling to find experienced talent, don't give up hope. You can develop your own team of software engineers, and I can help you do it.

Who says what software engineers does isn’t applicable in their day to day lives.. Lets understand the similarities. A software engineer needs to know dev, OS, networking, administration, HLD, LLD, politics and what not…😅 Similarly, a software engineer needs to know 1. How income tax works 2. How real estate works 3. How medical policies work 4. How a car functions 5. How to fix cooler 6. How to fix an electricity wiring 7. How to drive in mountains 8. How to bargain while buying Anything did I miss ? One field but different jobs… Still the biggest tax payers…Yes we are engineers😂😂 #software #engineering

A career mistake that software developers often make is tying their identity too closely to a particular technology or product. Unless you have a significant stake in a specific tech (e.g. you are its creator), you'll be better off treating techs as interchangeable tools.

I saw a software engineer... no company swag no stickers on laptop no mechanical keyboard no multi desktop setup no selfies posted on LinkedIn He was just sitting there and writing code on the default IDE. . . . Building elite Tech teams | Founder of Ventellect | Host of Ventellect's Building our world Podcast 🎙
I reckon in Q4, Tech companies will have 1 or 2 more Software Engineers than usual handing in their notice. Compared to the last 12 months at least. A little retention headache that has not popped up in a while now. And a reminder to look after your Software Engineers. Or someone else will. #techrecruitment #softwareengineering #ventellect
