Part of why marketing can never be automated and requires a special skill set: the creativity needed. Cutting through the noise takes out-of-the-box thinking and experimentation. Word of mouth marketing, baby. It's the oldest trick in the book , and it's still the best. Why? Because it's authentic. It's people telling other people about the things they love. And when people hear about something from someone they trust, they're more likely to check it out. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Dennis, it's the 21st century. Word of mouth marketing is so old school. There are all sorts of new and fancy marketing channels out there." True, true. But all the social media in the world can't beat a good old-fashioned word-of-mouth recommendation. Because when someone tells you about something they love, they're not just selling you a product or service. They're selling you a feeling. A feeling of trust, of connection, of belonging. So how do you get people talking about your brand? Do something worth talking about. Create a product or service that's so good, people can't help but tell their friends about it. Offer exceptional customer service. Be a good corporate citizen. Get involved in your community. When you do things worth talking about, word of mouth marketing will take care of itself. And when it does, you'll be well on your way to growing your business organically.

An interesting critique of ML from Walid Saba (outlined in his story [below] and detailed in the thread linked to *his* story), which effectively re-asserts the importance of Kant's "synthetic a priori" judgments as providing the necessary foundations for human knowledge. I.e., The most general laws of nature, like the truths of mathematics, **cannot be justified by experience**, yet must apply to it universally ... I.e., Kant argued (from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy): "that even so elementary an example in arithmetic as 7+5=12 is synthetic since the concept of 12 is not contained in the concepts of 7, 5, or +. Thus, appreciating the truth of this proposition would seem to require some kind of active “synthesis” by the mind, uniting the different constituent thoughts (1787 [1998], B15).
