Today, I had an amazing experience of leading a workshop with our summer interns - a diverse and talented group of rangatahi and pakeke, each at different stages in their careers and learning journeys. Our focus was 'The 5-Year Plan', guiding them through our strategic framework and discussing our organisation's priorities.
In the session, we split into groups, allowing each to delve into specific priority areas. This ignited a vibrant exchange of thoughts, likes, wishes, and wonders, enriching our perspective on our mahi.
Three key themes emerged in addition to the great feed-in they provided:
- There is a need to diversify our communication platforms for broader and more effective audience engagement, including more online.
- The importance of regular workshops like the one we had today to hear directly from our whānau and to be continually challenged in our approach.
- A positive affirmation of our current path in providing essential services to whānau, with scope for further improvement.
A standout moment was when our interns suggested including a rangatahi representative on our board or forming a rangatahi council. Rather than simply agreeing, I challenged them: "Why don't you start it?" I've observed that the most successful kaupapa are those led directly by the whānau. So, while I could put out a call, it's more impactful for initiatives to be youth-driven, resonating more deeply within our whānau. Of course, we will provide the resources behind them, but I wanted to say to them that it is all in your hands, and we should be ready to implement the solutions we propose.
Today wasn't just about strategy; it was a celebration of the potential and insight our young people bring. Their involvement is crucial in shaping an inclusive, forward-looking future.
Meet some of our Interns here.
