Morning of Day 1 of the CIGRE Grid of the Future Conference (https://lnkd.in/dmPd6Ymj) Keynote Speaker Chris Root showing the challenges of DER integration in a small grid (compared to other territories), for example the quick variation of solar generation caused by cloudy days and how the utility has to be able to match those variation with available generation. Limits in solar capacity when there is snow on panels. The new challenges that planners face, moving from planning based on summer and winter peaks to now having to plan for summer midday peak, summer evening peak, nighttime minimum and mid-day minimum. An interesting solution been adopted by Green Mountain power by renting storage to end users with the understanding that they can have access to that stored energy three times a month when needed by the system. The distribution innovation substation, feeder and end-use customer panel had an interesting discussion. The need to work with end users to solve the problems faced by the local utility, collaboration among all stakeholders, have a holistic approach to ensure the distribution grid is resilient when the goals set for NetZero are met. Session 1B talked about the need of understanding what is been measured and what output is been produced by machine learning algorithms is very important to fully take advantages of this technologies (no black boxes). The challenges on implementing Digital Twins for power systems was presented by Jeremy Till and the benefits of adding communications for DER was discussed by Dan Ernstmann. The grid of the future will be dominated by power electronics. Understanding their behaviour, the unique oscillatory phenomena that can occur and the tools to analyze them is of key importance to safeguard reliability, as highlighted by the recent FERC order 901. I just wrapped up a great experience at CIGRE US Grid of the Future Symposium in Kansas City.  It was very exciting for me to present  on "A Framework for Assessing Marginal Cost Pricing Through a System Reliability Lens," in a great session moderated by Darren E. Campbell, P.E. Electric Power Engineers is a member of CIGRE, a great thought leadership, research and industry platform; we plan to play a significant part in the future. Perhaps I will see you in CIGRE Paris in August 2024. EPE’s director of energy market analysis, Mohamed Ahmed (Sadek), Ph.D., P.Eng., MIEEE, joined me for the event as well and was a valuable contributor to the paper underlying our presentation that we submitted to CIGRE. We had great discussions with the other session members including Jessica Lau from Xcel Energy who presented on “Exploring Customer Interoperability Pathways with the Utility and Grid Service Providers,” and Danial Nazemi from the PJM Interconnection who presented “Exploring the Benefits of Demand Response in the PJM Wholesale Energy Market: A Cost-Benefit Perspective.” Great content and I encourage others to find their presentation and paper from the CIGRE portal. All sessions were rich in content, with several on distribution and the grid edge, blackout insights and the dissolving T&D seams with excellent presenters, emphasizing the need to accelerate addressing the need for more reliability and resilience metrics. The entire conference echoed in parts and pieces, and then holistically, the need for new products and services to address the gaps in our systems (aka markets, study process, and regulatory) framework so we can incentivize the development of the right infrastructure and resources that tie into reliability and resilience. This is needed in order to keep the lights on during our journey toward a clean energy transition with all the challenges in the mix. And... if you have not met John McDonald in his role as VP for Technical Activities for USNC of CIGRE, I encourage you to attend future events he organizes. I'd like to extend my gratitude to CIGRE for organizing such a comprehensive event and to everyone who attended my presentation. Let's continue to innovate and shape the future of energy together!
