Q| What is the purpose of using an Auto Transformer instead of a normal power transformer in power systems ? Ans| Auto Transformers are used in power systems for several reasons: Cost Efficiency: Auto transformers use less copper and iron, making them cheaper for the same power rating. Example: For voltage transformation between 220 kV and 132 kV, an auto transformer would be more economical than a two-winding transformer. Improved Voltage Regulation: They provide better voltage regulation due to lower impedance. Example: In a transmission network where voltage stability is crucial, an auto transformer can maintain the voltage more consistently. Size and Weight: They are smaller and lighter compared to conventional transformers. Example: In a constrained substation space, an auto transformer can fit better due to its compact size. Higher Efficiency: They have higher efficiency because of reduced losses. ⚡️Managing voltage levels comes from maintaining a balance between elements on the system, which absorb reactive power (decreasing voltage) or generate reactive power (increasing voltage). ⚡️Devices that store energy through a magnetic field produced by a flow of current are said to absorb reactive power; those that store energy through electric fields are supposed to generate reactive power. 🔋The reactive power in a network will influence the voltage levels. While the frequency is stable across the network, voltages across the system are determined by the prevailing real and reactive power supply and demand. If the network does not have suitable reactive power injections at the right locations, the voltage profile of the transmission system will exceed statutory planning and operational limits. #UPFC #Unified Power Flow Controller

🛳 Hybridization of the power system is one of the key technologies to reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency, which applies to most vessel types. The efficiency improvement can be achieved by shifting the engine’s operating point towards the optimal region, reducing the number of active generators in the bus, or reducing the start and stop of engine generator sets. 🍃 The vessels can adopt either AC or DC power systems; the AC grid with a fixed bus frequency has been dominant. One of the stated benefits of DC power systems is higher system efficiency. In the https://lnkd.in/d_pD526J, polynomial efficiency component models are used to estimate the dynamic efficiency of a cruise ship.🔋A DC structure is shown in the figure; note the two batteries, each with a 14 MWh capacity. One is used instead of a backup generator, and the second is used to optimise fuel consumption. 🔦 The dynamic efficiency when a DC system is used is slightly higher than when an AC system is used. This is mostly related to the battery having one conversion step less. However, as the battery supplies only a small part of the needed energy, the overall effect on the average dynamic efficiency is quite low (42.37% vs. 42.94%). 🎯 More interesting is observing the increased battery usage when a DC system is used. The energy supplied by the battery during a voyage increases by 61%. As there is a smaller efficiency penalty to using battery energy on DC, the total amount of diesel consumed is reduced by almost 9 tonnes, i.e., 27.7 tonnes of CO2. For comparison, an average passenger car releases 4.6 tonnes of CO2 in a year. #marine #cleanenergy #decarbonization #powerelectronics #powersystems
