NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—New Jersey’s unemployment rate is rising faster than any other state’s as more people are seeking work, but not enough are able and willing to fill the jobs available. Some of the state’s white-collar employers, such as in business and professional services, cut jobs over the past year The Garden State’s experience could be a harbinger for the nation: rising unemployment and slower job growth overall, coupled with continued worker shortages in specific areas. The persistent mismatches between job seekers and job postings show how the state and national labor markets are adjusting to the slowing postpandemic economy. 

Connecticut is outperforming the nation with a labor force participation rate of 64.7%, higher than the national average. April's job report added 500 more jobs upon review. With 2022 and 2023 marking the highest job growth in decades, private sector employment is now at 104.3% of pre-pandemic levels. There are 90,000 job openings statewide and over 80,000 residents looking for work, showing promise for continued economic growth.

21 states have expanded access to state jobs through a simple move: assessing or removing bachelor’s degree requirements. With state, local, and federal governments employing 15% of the U.S. workforce, these actions are of enormous consequence, especially for “STARs,” or workers who are skilled through alternative routes. According to the data, Texas has consistently outperformed the national job growth rates over the past year and set new records in multiple labor metrics. The state's total employment reached an unprecedented 13,979,100, boosted by the addition of 16,700 nonfarm jobs in August alone. The number of actively employed Texans set a new record at 14,489,000, and the overall labor force size reached a historic high of 15,111,900. Washington State job market is shrinking, especially among the tech industry, with thousands of job being cut quietly. This article is recognizing the slower pay raises in our work force while the inflation and interest rates are still remaining high. Our state economy is not as healthy as it used to be. We must learn to live within our means, especially during the election year of 2024. Our Port of Seattle, as our major economic engine in this region, need to manage our trade and airport revenue well. Too many public officials have little or no understanding of our economy and fiscal responsibility. We, the residents and general public will bear the ultimate burden of more tax and with deterioration of our standard of living.
