Would you quit on stage in front of 800 people? If you have a decent reputation, it's not bad strategy when you think about it.
Well, last week at the Ad Black Sea - International Festival of Creativity, JWT Metro's former Head of Strategy and current Creative Director Lado Malazonia came up on stage as my victim to show how strategy frameworks are useful for life.
I asked him for the issue he wanted to discuss. He said, "I don't enjoy working in advertising any more." We could have taken it in one of two ways:
1. Convince Lado to stay in advertising,
2. Convince Lado to quit.
The latter felt more honest.
So I ran Lado through my Four Points framework and a few of the techniques I like to use. When we're using the Four Points for life, I like it when the strategy statement feels like a phrase you might say to yourself, a way to talk back to yourself or a way to talk your way through a situation.
With Lado, we landed on, "There's no going back." Yes, it's an idiom but we did this in 20 minutes in front of a lot of people.
Then, as I was finishing typing, Lado took off his lanyard and said, "JWT Metro, I quit."
My stomach dropped. I wondered, "Had this been staged?" Then I realized I was on the stage and it was completely random that Lado had come up.
From what I understand, people (including JWT Metro in Tbilisi, Georgia) are very fond of Lado so perhaps he felt like this wasn't a rude thing to do. I don't know. And I think his wife, who's an illustrator and who was in the audience, was okay with it despite sharing a photo to Instagram stories with the word "Nooooooooooooo" on it.
Would you ever quit on stage?
Best wishes with what comes next, Lado.
