Summer days, drifting away…. So as Summer officially ends, although it never seemed to arrive in Manchester, I’ve been wrapping up my projects before going on hols. Whilst the weather disappointed, the breadth of projects I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of with Good Sense Research has been a delight! From confectionery to cheese; restaurants to ready meals; tomatoes to tortillas; cider to chicken plus organics, frozen, condiments and pizza as well, I’ve been on a food and drink journey of discovery with consumers and shoppers up and down the land! Getting up close and personal with households as they shared their opinions and experiences in meal and snack provision, brand engagement, decision making and trade offs. We’ve used Interactive Workshops, Shopalongs, Cookalongs, Shopper Shoes, On-line communities, 1-2-1 depths interviews and fabulous Discussion Groups (often maligned, but, when done well, an invaluable forum to examine and challenge attitudes and build opportunities) and it’s been a joy! It’s been especially rewarding to work collaboratively with our Food Innovation Solutions experts- special shout out to Olly, Kate, Danny and Finn as they have helped client teams action the insights, bringing inspirational innovation across menus, products and packaging. I’ve also been struck by the bravery of client teams in experimenting with new approaches and especially putting their faith in their audiences/potential audiences in completing challenging pre tasks to help us provide a more holistic context for insight capture. And I’ve got a total buzz from sharing learnings and recommendations in a series of animated and energetic debrief/workshops! I’m so very lucky to love the work I do and the people I work with- although I am ready for a short break and making the most of late summer nights! Can’t wait to see what Autumn brings… PS. Yesterday I attended the Foot for Thought: Spring Parade 2024 at Artis. It was hosted by the The Net Positive Partner Program with a deep dive into the footprint of our current food system and how we can take a step towards a more sustainable future of food. It was an impressive day! The day started with Maarten Oonk telling about how we should look at what can be done, not looking at a confirmation of the problem. Courage, commitment and conviction is needed. After that there was an interesting conversation with Niels Boetje (Cargill) and Babs Dijkshoorn (Achmea). We need to work together within and outside the company throughout the chain. A collaboration through sectors is needed to make a bold move. An interesting question asked by the audience was how to divide time between fixing daily tasks vs. net positive goals. The reaction was that 93% of the time we work on things we need to fix today, 6% we work on what we need to fix tomorrow and we have very little time for priorities for the longer term. Key message: be bold. During the day we had two break-outs. One of the break-outs I attended was from the Food Cabinet - creative agency for good food. Interesting to learn more about 6 food profiles based on how much time, money, and effort the consumer is willing to invest in the purchasing process versus whether a consumer is more likely to go for the tasty choice or the conscious choice. The day ended with Diederick Croese who told us more about the knowledge of the world (head), knowledge of self (heart) and moral courage (hands). Also interesting to take into account that some people take the goals as a starting point whilst others take the principle as a starting point. To conclude my impression of the day: the key to transformative growth is to see the opportunity space and experiment. What will you do differently tomorrow?
