This week's business development topic: Networking I get 40% of my business from the networking group I've belonged to for 18 years. Even if you're not the most outgoing person in the world you can still develop lots of business through networking with the right people! There are a few things that you must be aware of if you're going to network effectively, and some mistakes that can make your networking efforts a waste of time. When networking the goal IS NOT to sell to the people you're networking with...the goal is to turn them into your extended sales force. Your networking partners need to get to know you, so they can trust you. If they don't trust you, they're not going to make introductions for you, and a well-made introduction takes you halfway to the sale before you even meet with the prospect. 1) You need a well crafted brief commercial - Your "elevator pitch" must clearly let people know who you are, what you do, and MOST IMPORTANTLY how you'll help the people they introduce you to (the benefits you provide). There should be one short sentence in your commercial that is memorable and repeatable. I don't care if the people I'm networking with remember anything else as long as they remember my tag line - Measurable and Sustainable Sales Increases. That way, when they meet someone who is complaining that sales aren't where they should be, they can say, "Really? You should meet my friend Jeff Goldberg. He helps companies like yours (salespeople like you) get measurable and sustainable sales increases." 2) NEVER end your brief commercial with, "And I'd love to do business with all of you." Yes, of course we all want to do business with as many people as possible, but the purpose of networking is NOT to tell to your partners. 3)) The fortune is in the follow up. It's NOT about going to the meetings, although that's important too. You must do one-on-ones (We call them Opportunity Calls in the group I belong to) where you truly get to know each other if you expect to receive a generous amount of referrals.
