We sort our wastes with a dual collection system. In our cities, we support the recycling process by sorting waste correctly with blue and grey containers. By disposing recyclable waste in blue containers and non-recyclable waste in grey containers, we both protect our environment and contribute to the circular economy. Within the scope of the Zero Waste Regulation, there is at least two separate collection systems on the streets and streets for the separate collection of plastic, paper, glass, metal and other wastes in municipal service areas. In addition, waste collection centres are established for the collection of waste batteries, vegetable waste oil, textile waste, waste medicines, waste electrical and electronic equipment and bulky waste, and trainings along with awareness raising activities are carried out at these centres. Hey, #linkedin family today let's talk about waste recycling. Ready, let's go! Have you ever thought about the fact that the waste you just thrown around can be recycled? First, what are those things that are considered waste: Waste (or wastes) are unwanted or unusable materials. Waste is any substance discarded after primary use, or is worthless, ineffective, and of no use. According to the United Nations Statistics Division waste is described as materials that are not prime products (that is, products produced for the market) for which the generator has no further use in terms of/her purposes of production, transformation, or consumption, and of which he/she wants to dispose. Wastes may be generated during the extraction of raw materials, the processing of raw materials into intermediate and final products, the consumption of final products, and other human activities. Sometimes looking at the definitions and the physical look of any object categorized as waste, people often feel that they can never be of any use again. Do you know waste can be recycled into something great and can even be of good to us? Before we go into that, know this to recycle an object means to convert the waste state of that object to a usable and valuable state. I have been recycling since the mid 1970's when my science teacher introduced us to recycling. We also composted yard waste. We did this to reduce pollution in general, and reduce waste sent to landfills. We always had less garbage than our neighbors. However, the landfills continue to grow (as does our population) and markets for some recycled materials are changing. I still see garbage along roads that Adopt A Highway groups collect, but not every mile of road is adopted. If we used trash receptacles and recycled everything we can, we can certainly reduce pollution. Is it really possible to be zero waste? Zero seems absolute and I do not like that term. Never say never. Seems like a great opportunity for innovation and we may have to pay more some products or disposal methods to reduce waste.

Waste generation and mismanagement are polluting the planet at accelerating and unsustainable rates. Reducing waste generation is far more sustainable than managing waste after it has been created, which is why ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ is ordered the way it is, with reduce first and recycling as a last resort. https://lnkd.in/e7Z56TY6

We call this tendency recycling bias and reduction neglect.' Today is #GlobalRecyclingDay ♻ A day to reflect upon our habits. 🗑 Only 9% of global plastic waste is recycled (source : OECD). 15% is collected for recycling but 40% of that is disposed of as residues. Another 19% is incinerated, 50% ends up in landfill and 22% evades waste management systems and goes into uncontrolled dumpsites, is burned in open pits or ends up in terrestrial or aquatic environments, especially in poorer countries. Okay... so in addition to recycling, it might actually be best to remove plastic as much as possible from our lives 😉 and use at best the material things we have at hand ? Applying the R's of recycling can help us do so : REthink your choices REnt from someone REfuse single use REduce consumption REfill the container REuse everything REfurbish old stuff REpair before you replace REpurpose, be creative, reinvent REcycle : last option if you can't let it... European week for waste reduction, running from 18th to 26th November 2023. In our everyday life, packaging helps us to contain, protect, transport and even present any kind of goods. It has become present in all the steps of the value chain, from the producer to the consumer.  However, packaging has a massive environmental impact. In terms of use of virgin material, 40% of plastics and 50% of paper used in the EU is destined for packaging, while, looking at the final stage of life, it accounts for 36% of municipal solid waste. "The total packaging waste generation in the EU increased from 66 million tonnes in 2009 to 78.5 million tonnes in 2019 (around 173kg per inhabitant)" The COVID-19 pandemic might have further enhanced the trend due to more internet sales, more sales in supermarkets for food consumed at home instead of restaurants and more take-away/prepared home delivery of food.  Once packaging becomes waste, it’s sorted between recyclable and unrecyclable packaging waste. From 2012 to 2020, the amount of unrecyclable packaging increased. The situation is even more aggravated by a relevant amount of recyclable waste that, due to the lack of recycling infrastructure and the unprofitability of the recycling process, ends up in landfill, nevertheless. Furthermore, a relevant part is even not collected, and this affects the environment, especially the marine one. ♻️ When it comes to “reduce, reuse, recycle,” most of us only remember the last one. This Earth Day, it’s time to shift our focus to the first two. While recycling has been heavily promoted as a primary solution to waste-related pollution, it captures less than a quarter of waste in the U.S. alone.
