Are Companies Truly LGBTQ+ Allies, or Just Jumping on the Pride Bandwagon? Having lived in both San Francisco and New York City for over 15 years, I’ve grown accustomed to seeing LGBTQ+ flags outside businesses and in various neighborhoods year-round. In places like the Castro in San Francisco, or West Village, Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen in New York, LGBTQ+ pride isn’t just a seasonal display; it’s a permanent fixture. These areas boast loyal allies who actively support the community 365 days a year. During my recent visits to Spain, I observed a similar commitment to LGBTQ+ support. It is heartening to see how these places have integrated LGBTQ+ acceptance into their daily culture, not just during Pride Month but consistently throughout the year. Contrast this with my current experiences in Helsinki. Here, the city undergoes a vibrant transformation during Pride Month, with LGBTQ+ flags adorning every corner and businesses loudly proclaiming their support. Yet, come July, this enthusiastic display abruptly vanishes, and the city reverts to its pre-Pride normalcy. This stark change begs the question: are these companies genuinely allies of the LGBTQ+ community, or are they merely capitalizing on a trend? This phenomenon, often referred to as “rainbow-washing,” raises critical concerns. True allyship involves consistent, year-round support and advocacy, not just a month-long marketing campaign. When businesses remove their LGBTQ+ flags right after June, it sends a troubling message that their support is conditional and performative, rather than genuine and enduring. It is a bit funny to see this reality, but it happens and, unfortunately, it is growing year after year. More companies every June suddenly become “ALLIES” of the LGBTQ+ community. I can assure you that some of these companies have no idea what LGBTQ+ even stands for. A couple of years ago, while working at a Finnish company, I had an eye-opening experience. without forgetting the homophobia, sexism, racism in the same place but they claimed to be allies! A Human Resources Manager, trying to engage with me, struggled to correctly say the alphabet of my own community. Yet, this company had its logo adorned with a rainbow and its social media loudly proclaimed its alliance with the LGBTQ+ community. I can assure you this event happens constantly. As consumers and members of the LGBTQ+ community, we must critically evaluate the intentions behind these displays of support. Genuine allies don’t pack away their solidarity with the decorations at the end of Pride Month. They continue to advocate, support, and stand with the LGBTQ+ community every single day. In the end, actions speak louder than symbols. It’s time we hold businesses accountable and urge them to move beyond temporary gestures to meaningful, year-long advocacy and support. 🌈 Today I joined the PRIDE Walk to Support the LGBTQ+ Community. Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion. Why? 🌈 Hate, homophobia, xenophobia, gender equality, pro choice vs pro life, black or white, immigrants vs nationalists and fear from being different are still on the media front page. And it shouldn’t be. Living in inclusive world gives you freedom. Freedom to choose to be different and not having to fear going to jail or being prosecuted. And this is not the case in many countries around the world including Slovakia. Therefore the #PRIDE #PARADE is still important even in July 22, 2023. 🌈 It is crucial that we stand in #solidarity with the #LGBTQ+ community and support their rights. Here is MY why. And yes, you can have different opinion as long as you bring it in civilized dialoge I am fine. I see party election billboards by the road “We will stop Liberalism”. You will what??? Here's why being a part of the PRIDE walk is essential: 🏳️🌈 The PRIDE walk is not just a parade; it's a powerful symbol of our commitment to advocating for #equality and basic human rights. By participating, we show our support for equal opportunities, treatment, and recognition, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. 🏳️🌈 #Inclusive workplaces are happier, more productive, and innovative. By actively supporting the LGBTQ+ community, we contribute to a work environment where everyone feels accepted and valued for who they are, which leads to increased creativity and collaboration. 🏳️🌈 We have opportunity to educate and bring #awereness to ourselves and others about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. It allows us to address prejudices and misconceptions, fostering greater understanding and empathy. 🏳️🌈 Discrimination and stigma can have severe impacts on #mentalhealth. By participating in the PRIDE walk, we send a message of hope and support to those struggling with their identity or facing prejudice, encouraging them to seek help and fostering a more accepting society. 🏳️🌈 Our presence at the PRIDE walk demonstrates our commitment to positive #change. It encourages others to join the movement, amplifying the voices of those fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and pushing for more inclusive policies and legislation. When we walk alongside the LGBTQ+ community, we become allies in their fight for equality and justice. 🏳️🌈 I want to celebrate love in all its forms and embrace the beautiful #diversity that makes us unique. The PRIDE walk is a joyous occasion, filled with love, laughter, and acceptance - a world we aspire to create. Each year, 23 September marks #BiVisibilityDay. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by bi members of the #LGBTQ+ community.
