There's a lot of buzz this week about a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition about how to eat a diet that’s good for you and good for the planet -- and it's no surprise to us that the research shows people who eat plant-predominant diets have lower rates of premature death from heart disease, cancer and other chronic illnesses. Those eating habits also have a smaller environmental footprint! A study on 180,446 UK Biobank participants published in the Nature Communications journal reveals that higher adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet significantly reduces risks of depression, anxiety, and their co-occurrence. "The EAT-Lancet reference diet takes into account the multiple links between health, nutrition intake and the environment, and provides a set of recommendations for feeding the global population within planetary boundaries. Overall, this dietary pattern is primarily plant based and emphasizes the intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts. It consists of moderate amounts of seafood and poultry and considerably limits the intake of red meat, added sugar and saturated fat. Existing observational studies have demonstrated inverse associations of the EAT-Lancet reference diet with multiple diseases and mortality." The EAT-Lancet Commission proposed the planetary health diet, but concerns about micronutrient adequacy have been raised. The diet may fall short in essential micronutrients like B12, calcium, iron, and zinc. Achieving nutrient adequacy may require adjustments to the diet, like increasing nutrient-dense foods such as fish, eggs, and beef while reducing phytate-rich foods.
