Acquisitions and partnerships represent a vital lifeline to keep science alive, particularly for the pre-commercial, clinical-stage players for whom cash is critical to fueling years of clinical trials and ultimately a product launch. In 2023, small deals are pacing at 160% of their 2022 levels (in terms of deal volume). A good report from AGC Partners on the tech private equity industry. In '23, of the 3,000 disclosed software deals, 1,500 were completed by PE. Tech PEs took 91 public software companies private in past three years worth over $300B, and now there are only 150 public software companies left. I attended the educational webinar "Meeting the Challenges Ahead," which Mergers & Acquisitions Magazine and Affinity presented. The event brought together industry experts to discuss the current landscape of private equity deals and share valuable strategies for achieving success. The panel discussion featured Jeremy Holland, Managing Partner, Origination at The Riverside Company, Don Ritucci, Head of Healthcare M&A, Investment Banking at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., Andy Bryson, SVP of Product at Affinity, and Danielle Fugazy, Contributing Editor at Mergers and Acquisitions - themiddlemarket.com, who served as the moderator. Several major topics were covered in depth throughout the webinar. It brought to light the extreme quickening of private equity dealmaking in 2021 and the difficulties that followed. Private equity companies now have more time to examine opportunities because of the longer investment cycle, but they face additional challenges, such as increased credit headwinds and a greater focus on the value creation process. The panel discussed how private equity investors may set themselves apart in a crowded marketplace. In addition, the evolving private equity landscape and the novel tactics and strategies used by businesses in response to these issues were discussed during the webinar. Deal-closing tools and services were also discussed as a means to improve the process. Participants learned crucial information about the future of their respective fields and what to anticipate in the following year. Tech PEs stayed busy last week with two notable platform acquisitions by TPG and Thoma Bravo, plus one notable add-on in Primus Capital Funds (Primus Capital)-backed Rev.io's acquisition of Tigerpaw Software. On the strategic front, Johnson Controls bought FM:Systems from Accel-KKR, and Black Knight sold Optimal Blue to Constellation Software Inc. to save its own merger deal with ICE. Growth-stage companies benefitted from multiple $100M+ financings last week, headlined by o9's $116M raise from General Atlantic, KKR and other existing investors. In the public markets, software valuations climbed further to 6.4x trailing revenues while the IPO market remained stagnant.
