🎙New Trending Globally podcast episode: What should the Supreme Court’s role in our politics be? At the Watson Institute, the beginning of summer means commencement festivities, moving trucks, and bittersweet goodbyes. In American politics, the beginning of summer means something very different: the approach of the Supreme Court's summer recess and, with it, the handing down of the Court’s final decisions from this term. This year’s cases will have profound effects on the 2024 election, gun rights, reproductive rights, and more. While it’s nothing new for the Supreme Court to weigh in on contentious issues in society, as our guest on this episode sees it, something profound has shifted within the Court over the last few years. The decisions they hand down are not only increasingly transformative, they’re also lining up more and more clearly with our partisan politics. And no matter your politics, that should be a problem. Kate Shaw is a constitutional law scholar and professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and a 2001 graduate of Brown University. She is also the co-host of the podcast “Strict Scrutiny,” which explores the Supreme Court — the cases, the people and the culture surrounding it. On this episode, Dan Richards spoke with her about how the Supreme Court fits in our politics today, how that role has changed over time, and what Kate thinks its role in our society today should be. I encourage you to check out this episode of our podcast hosted by Angela Weszely, CEO of ProGrace, and her guest Christy Vines, CEO of IDEOS Institue. It is an insightful conversation on the power of hearing each other's stories. Hearing a person's story requires listening to understand and identify the connecting points. What if we stopped the back and forth in the abortion debate to listen to the other side? Angela and Christy share how she and her team use Empathic Intelligence (EmQ) to transform spaces of division. The results advance empathy, transform systems, and inspire solutions. As with the ProGrace approach to help Christians think, talk, and engage differently in unintended pregnancy and abortion conversations, Ideos Institute uses Jesus' teaching model to help people navigate contentious topics to find common ground. Learn how you can retrain your brain to do a different job of moving from debate to dialogue by putting yourself in someone's story. https://lnkd.in/gSjCVcF3 #realtalk #prograce #ideosinstitute #crucialconversations #empathyinleadership

🌟The 'paradox' that I find the term BODY COUNT🌟 Body count, if you are not aware, was coined(not sure it it's slang)to mean the number of s*xual partners a person has had. Thriving in patriarchy, the term "body count" has often stigmatized women's s*xual history, raising questions about genuine concern(which is very much unsolicited) for their reproductive health or a patriarchal urge to control. Notably absent in discussions on men's reproductive health, it reveals a double standard that is loud, it's almost defeaning!! Why does society label women 'sluts' , 'loose' based on their s*xual history while granting men some sort of 'power', 'superiority' , 'good game'? And no, this is no competition, I know better than to portray this us such. Unraveling this paradox highlights the need to liberate women from the scrutiny surrounding their s*xual lives. Women s*xual lives and reproductive choices have over and over been politicized, its sickening!!!. I wish society could recognize that granting the women, without judgement, the liberty on how they experience and explore their s*xual lives, contributes to broader societal liberation and reduces stigma around S*xual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). I implore us to shift the conversation away from judgment and empower women to make decisions about their bodies without societal interference. And for crying out loud, don't ask people their body counts, it none of your business to begin with, uncouth and very weird!!! #SRHR #GenderEquality #SocietyNorms

Some quotes from this linked article by Elise Loehnen are too good not to share, including: 1. "So first, my issue is not with these podcast hosts hosting podcasts—they’re all smart and credentialed men. My issue with these men is that they do not see women as credible experts because they rarely interview them—and as their listeners, we interpret this as perfectly normal. 2. “Here are the numbers, through the end of last summer: Of Sam Harris’s 376 episodes to that date, spanning across a decade, he had hosted fewer than 60 women (about 15%). Tim Ferriss had platformed fewer than 100 women, across nearly 700 episodes (about 13%); Dr. Peter Attia had found only 28 women across nearly 300 episodes (11%) worth interviewing—one being his young daughter. And in two years as a weekly podcast host, Andrew Huberman had interviewed only a dozen women total (8%).” 3. "I can predict what these men might say in response to this criticism: We’re gender- and color-blind in terms of our guests, we simply choose the “best” ones. Or, there aren’t enough high-caliber, qualified women to interview. And also, they would be flat-out wrong." Our latest episode is a different kind of conversation on Gender-Affirming Care for Children and Adolescents. For this conversation, we've brought together two of the top youth gender medicine experts in the country: - Dr. Erica Anderson is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist and academic, specializing in Gender, Sexuality, and Identity. She served on the medical staff of the Youth Gender Clinic at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and on the board of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). Doctor Anderson is a trans woman who transitioned as an adult. - Dr. Jack Drescher is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). In 2022, Dr. Drescher was a member of the APA’s DSM-5 Workgroup on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders – responsible for revising the definition of what is now referred to as “gender dysphoria.” An openly gay psychiatrist, Dr. Drescher has also served on the World Health Organization’s workgroup revising sexual and gender diagnoses. This is a difficult conversation for many reasons. First and foremost, there is a dark cloud of hate and bigotry that hangs over it. But that's not our focus. Instead, the conversation is rooted in how to address the acute suffering of young people: what we know, what we don’t know, and how to navigate these complexities when it comes to helping kids and their families have the best possible outcomes. For the first time on the show, there are actually very few disagreements between the two guests. That said, the conversation is a powerful and sustained disagreement with the current discourse on youth gender medicine and the more extreme voices who tend to dominate the public conversation. https://lnkd.in/emvRFNfU
