We're missing the bigger story! While everyone is buzzing about Netflix's $40 million ad-based subscribers, there's been surprisingly little focus on their game-changing announcement: the development of an in-house #adtech platform. This marks a significant shift from their 2022 partnership with Microsoft (i.e., Xandr) for ad placement. Netflix's new approach opens up the #CTV (connected TV) / #FAST (Free Ad Supported TV) market dramatically. By supporting programmatic tools like The Trade Desk, Google's Display, Magnite—and presumably others in the future—Netflix is making their platform easier for advertisers to access. Additionally by collaborating with analytics players like DoubleVerify, Integral Ad Science, iSpotTV, and Nielsen, they're enhancing measurement capabilities and solving one of the major criticisms (lack of transparency) of the #walledGardens . Back in December 2024, in IDC's "CMO Futurescape" I predicted that 23% of walled garden vendor revenue would come from indirect sources. Well, this... is that! It's not perfect, but Netflix's announcement of an in-house tool, ironically enough, will allows advertisers to use their current adtech stack to manage and measure their "walled garden" ads. This simplifies operations, reducing the need for handling "one more platform," and is a welcome change for many. What's next? Will Walmart's retail networks integrate with Hulu? Will Facebook ads work with Google search? The potential for brands to access multiple channels through seamlessly integrated tech stacks, and poke holes in the big-tech walls is incredibly exciting indeed.

Some people predict that 2024 will be the year when shoppable ads will take the firm lead in advertising. I can understand why. More TV companies are joining the competition to provide a shoppable experience to their viewers to stay ahead of the curve. 📺 So, who are the major players leading the change? 𝗥𝗼𝗸𝘂: With 75,8 million active accounts, Roku is pushing the envelope by partnering with Walmart, DoorDash, Shopify, and Unity. These collaborations have introduced a variety of shoppable ad formats, from on-screen purchases facilitated by Roku Pay to one-click ordering from Shopify merchants. Roku's success lies in its direct connection with consumers through logged-in account information and its superior performance in engaging consumers compared to traditional QR codes. 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸 (𝗡𝗕𝗖𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁: By integrating shoppable ads into Bravo's "Below Deck Mediterranean," viewers can shop for products directly from Walmart, blending entertainment with commerce. This initiative utilizes interactive on-screen carousels and QR codes to streamline the shopping process. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁: Paramount is testing its Shoppable TV technology in partnership with Kerv. Starting with the Australian Survivor audience, this pilot aims to allow viewers to purchase products directly from their screens. If successful, this feature will be rolled out globally. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘆: Their Gateway shop announced in January enables viewers to instantly send products from films and shows to their second screen without disrupting viewing. This approach caters to viewers' multi-screen habits, leveraging push notifications and email to promote offers. 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻: Amazon aims to elevate its sports advertising with interactive video ads, enabling viewers to shop for items with a simple click, surpassing traditional QR code interactions, and utilizing audience-based creative strategies for more accurately targeted marketing messages. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝟰: Partnering with Philips, UK’s Channel 4 incorporates QR codes into their Made in Chelsea show, allowing viewers to purchase products used by characters. Their approach merges product placement with instant shopping opportunities. Projected to generate up to $3 billion in U.S. ad revenue from an estimated 58 million households, Prime Video is set to become the world's largest ad-supported premium streaming service. 🌍 Amazon's advertising business extends beyond promoting brands across its properties. With a 24% revenue climb in Q1 to $11.8 billion, the company is also investing billions in live sports programming, aiming to attract more streaming viewers and ad dollars. 🏈 Amazon's ad-supported streaming content now reaches 175 million U.S. viewers every month, a significant rise from 120 million in 2021. With 200 million global customers, Amazon is poised to redefine the advertising game. 🌐 The result? A unique blend of digital and traditional advertising that caters to a wider audience, providing unparalleled targeting opportunities for brands. 🎯 Amazon's bold move 18 years ago to roll out ads on its website has evolved into a digital video ad revolution on Prime Video. The future is here, and Amazon is leading the way. 🚀
