Can you even make out with the naked eye the 0.5% of projects that achieved on time, budget and benefits?!? Mean cost over runs of 62% but many many in the fat tail with overrun of 100s% How do we pick up our game? Or perhaps this is not the important part of the story? #howbigthingsgetdone #megaprojects

Creator of Everyday Empires - chatting with everyday founders, builders, creators and sharing what I learn. 3x VP Product & Design. Dad of 2. Ultra runner.
I recently chatted with Matthew Foster of Mobile Motorboat Mechanics. He’s not your average boat mechanic. He did $1M in revenue last year, just started two years ago, and is already operating in 3 states with ambitions to have coverage across the US. Here’s what I learned from him 👇🏼 — 1. Opportunities are everywhere. Matt has a meeting where he finds out the project he’s poured energy into for months has just fallen through. Rather than mope about, he started looking for new opportunities immediately, and spots his $1M business opportunity on the drive home. — 2. Act now. Don’t overthink it. He’d noticed hundreds of boats in the lake he was driving by and wondered who did all the maintenance on them. Rather than leave it at that, he took action, calling all the boat mechanics in the area to learn more about their service, which led to his “aha” moment. — 3. Speed as a differentiator. Calling each of the boat mechanics, he learned the soonest any of them could get to him was 1 month. 1 month?! He immediately realized if he could service clients sooner, he’d have a big differentiator. How many other markets is this true for? — 4. Test your idea simply and quickly. To see if he was onto something, he quickly spun up a simple landing page and Facebook ad campaign. He didn’t try to build the perfect website, overthink his offering, or wait for customers to find him. The next day he had his first customer booking, and then the next, and the next. — 5. Don’t be afraid to scale I suspect most people who start a boat repair business don’t immediately scale it into multiple cities and states. Matt was able to because he has confidence in himself, his offering, and his team. — That's a wrap! If you enjoyed this thread and want to learn from more founders & creators: 1. Follow me (Ken Seals) for more of these 2. Repost so more future founders can learn from this

Are You Starting in a Rush? It can be tempting to plunge in headfirst without considering a coherent plan when we are just beginning something, a project, a relationship, or new construction. Needless to say, this generally has very poor outcomes. If we step back and take some time to properly consider what we aim to achieve and pay special care to mitigate any potential problem areas before we begin, we will do much better. #liminalcoaching #beginning #rushing #cooling #planning

Stop Starting, Start Finishing, But why... It helps to increase the speed in which value is delivered. The more work in progress concurrently, the slower the pace of delivery This was obvious to me while driving home from Devon following the bank holiday weekend There were no accidents on the road, yet a lot of time was spent queuing, in stand-still or slow moving traffic And this was because of the sheer amount of us choosing to drive home after the long weekend. A 4 hour expected drive, took me 7 hours!! With more cars on the road… the slower I could go! Just like the congested roads, too many concurrent projects slow down overall progress Remember this when starting new projects/tasks/outcomes… what could you finish first before starting something new.
