Senior Director Finance & Operations

It has been one year since I left a career in big business to take a job in an Akron-based non-profit, The Well Community Development Corporation.   As I reflect on my year, I wanted to share what I have learned in hopes it may help encourage those that may be going through a job change or considering a career change. My key learnings: 1.        Every ending has a new beginning.   Be open to embracing the new! 2.        We all have something we can give back.  It’s not just your money – but also your time and talent.   3.        It is good to learn true humility.  Putting yourself in situations that teach you how to serve others while checking your ego and pride at the door is profitable. 4.        Step outside of your lane.  Growth comes when you try something new. 5.        Know your organizations “Why”.   This brings clarity to your work and your role in the organization’s mission. 6.        Self-care cannot be overlooked. Your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being must be a priority, because you can’t pour from a dry cup. 7.        There is power in working amongst people rather than remotely.   In my season of remote work, I did not know how much I missed being with people.  The benefits of in-person work – energy, collaboration, and relationships – should not be overlooked. 8.        Life is short and tomorrow is not guaranteed.  Make each day count!

Dave Maynard - well said! Like you, I just completed my first year at a different company and industry. I’ve learned lots about myself during my career transition and over this past year. Being more grateful and giving back are at the top of my list. Sometimes it takes a change like this to help us see our purpose better. Very grateful for my opportunity and looking forward to many more years while enjoying the present here and now. Thanks again for sharing!!
