February 28 is HIV Criminalization Awareness Day. It has been observed since 2022 and was organized by the Sero Project, a non-profit organization, in collaboration with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. The day commemorates the criminalization, stigma, and discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS and calls for action to overcome these issues. Although HIV criminalization is gradually decreasing in many countries, stigma and discrimination in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region remain serious problems that require further efforts by governments, civil society organizations, and society at large. Terrence Higgins Trust and over twenty other HIV and sexual health charities have joined forces to call on the next government to seize the chance end new cases of HIV by 2030. They are calling for: 1. an expansion of opt-out HIV testing to GPs 2. the introduction of a national one-stop-shop online PrEP, HIV and STI postal testing service 3. the creation of a national re-engagement programme for people living with HIV who are not in care 4. the provision of year-on-year, above inflation increase to public health funding 5. the development of a national sexual health strategy 6. justice for those impacted by the contaminated blood scandal But there are less than 6 weeks until polls open and the UK elects the parliament that will have the chance to make this historic goal a reality. World AIDS Day 2023. A time to reflect on those who were lost to it and how much progress has been made in the fight against it. Still so much lack of knowledge education and awareness of what being HIV+ means today; leading to stigmatisation and phobia. Fortunately we live in times where it's a managed condition that usually has no impact on the day to day life of someone living with HIV. Increased education correlates with increased contraceptive use and less underage premarital sex, which means lower HIV/AIDS risk. In developing countries, secondary education is associated with an increase in girl’s knowledge of HIV/AIDS by one-fifth compared to those with low or no education. 'This report specifically captures HIV-related funding from philanthropic organizations around the world; it excludes any government funding to address HIV and AIDS, including domestic government, bilateral, and multilateral support.' A key finding from the report: 'Collectively, sex workers and their clients, gay men and MSM, people who use drugs, and transgender people and their sexual partners accounted for 70% of HIV infections globally and 94% of HIV infections outside of sub-Saharan Africa. Funding for these heavily impacted and often criminalized populations— often referred to as “key populations”—is represented in bold in the accompanying chart.' According to the NAIIS technical report of 2018, HIV prevalence among women in Nigeria is 1.7%. Pregnant women can pass the virus unto their unborn children if not screened, that is why we encourage HIV screenings at every prenatal appointment. While we are a Catholic charity, our membership includes those from all faiths, and from no faith at all.   What support can you provide? The support we provide begins with listening to you. Everyone needs someone with whom they can talk and who will understand them. We help to identify the concerns or problems you face and can support you to find a solution.   What can't you do? We are not medical doctors. If you need medical advice you should contact your doctors surgery or HIV clinic.
