Chairman of the Board at Marriott International

This past weekend we celebrated my father’s 91st birthday!  Every year, we gather with him at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn, a resort he loves and has been visiting since Marriott acquired the hotel in 1967.   My dad has inspired millions over his more than 66-year career with Marriott International. He has built the largest and most successful hospitality company the world has ever seen, but more importantly, he has been a terrific father.   He always made it a priority to be present for important milestones and events in the lives of his children and grandchildren, impressive given the overwhelming responsibilities he faced running a global company.   Just last year we had over 200 guests in Scottsdale to celebrate his 90th birthday. This year’s gathering was smaller, but a terrific opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to a wonderful father, mentor and friend. Here’s a picture from the big day – me with my dad, and two of my kids.    I love you.   Happy Birthday, Dad!!

David Marriott the highlight of my hotel career was when your Dad came to the opening of the Hanover Marriott (NJ) in 1986 and I was in the front of the greeting line with the GM because I was lucky enough to be the first employee of the month for the hotel. We obviously didn't have camera phones so the picture only lives in my head. Happy Birthday to Mr. Marriott!

Bill Marriott was my Bishop, my Stake President and he always treated me like his friend....like I'm important and that if I had a problem or a difficult challenge he wanted to help. I realize that Mr. Marriott is recognized internationally as a great business leader, and indeed he is, but what I know about Bill is that first and foremost he is a man of God and a disciple of Jesus Christ. Mr. Marriott is a righteous man with a large surplus of kindness and integrity.

Happy Birthday Mr. Marriott. There isn't a day that goes by that I am not grateful for the many lessons, professional and personal that you taught me. I am also blessed to teach a leadership class at Old Dominion University where I share those lessons. Ironic isn't it, that as we celebrate your birthday, as you continue to give through those of us privileged to have worked for you. Cheers.

Having worked in banquets at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in 2003 marked the beginning of my 11 year journey in the US. Coming from Brazil to the U.S. as part of a work visa program, I was able to have a hands-on experience with the highest levels of excellence in the field of hospitality. Looking back, I have a lot to thank Mr. Marriott, for what he has achieved is truly inspirational. My own career later would reflect on that, after graduating from Business School in New York, many years later, I developed a startup that aims to use the latest AI technology to train and improve human interaction around the world. I was inspired by the high standards of hospitality that I have witnessed during my time in the US, as compared to the rest of the world, but felt especially inspired by the highest standards, that I have seen during the time I've worked for JW Marriott. Thank you, Mr Marriott for being such an inspiration. Best wishes, lots of health and a happy birthday! #hospitality #inspiration #marriott #business #guestexperience #excellence

Happy Birthday Mr Marriott, and all the best wishes to you, your family, and best wishes to David Marriott, Family, and the Marriott Company. I worked for Marriott Hotels for over 35 years, starting in 1975 at the Boston Newton Hotel. Particepeting in opening new hotels, and working in many new and established hotels, until my retirement, and proud to be a small part of it, seeing the company grow. Your approach of people first, has been a major part, if not the major part in your success. But also Quality Standards, and training. Hope the „new“ giant company will continue to live up to the same standards. All the best wishes! And Happy Birthday Mr Marriott!
