Five years ago this past fall semester, I was given the incredible opportunity to develop and pilot the Carson College of Business's EDGE Program in support of a group of students that is near and dear to my heart--our first-generation undergraduate business students. Serving 25 new students each year, EDGE addresses the specific needs and barriers of students from low socio-economic, first-generation backgrounds as they transition to WSU and pursue an undergraduate business degree. Today, the EDGE program has grown from nine students to 64, and it has become a permanently funded program within the college through generous investments of time and money from our alumni and donors. The return on these investments in our EDGE students has been overwhelming. To say that I am proud of these students and their achievements is an understatement. What you and many others might not realize is just how incredible their achievements are in comparison to other first-generation students. Let's put this into perspective: ⭐ The graduation rate of EDGE students is 91%, but according to the Center for First-Generation Student Success, only 20% of first-generation students graduate within six years. ⭐ As of Spring 2023, 24% of current continuing EDGE students had studied abroad during their time at WSU. According to researchers at the University System of Georgia, only 8% of first-generation students nationwide had studied abroad while in college. ⭐ EDGE's first to second year retention rate for students who began at WSU in 2022-2023 was 100%. The year one to year two persistence rate for first-generation students nationwide is 82% according to the National Center for First-Generation Student Success. ⭐ As of Spring 2023, 55% of continuing EDGE students had participated in an internship during their time at WSU. According to the 2021 National Survey on College Internships report, only 15.8% of first-generation students reported that they had participated in an internship. Given these results, EDGE students can not only expect to fair better than their peers while at WSU, but they are set-up to fair far better once transitioning into their post-graduation careers. To ensure the successful career outcomes of our EDGE students, we launched our first "Transition from College to Career for First-Generation Students" course this Spring 2024. To this end, the WSU Carson College of Business EDGE program is not only about ensuring the success of these first-generation students while in college, but in supporting their ability to leverage their education toward overcoming generational poverty for themselves and their families. Go Cougs! #firstgen #gocougs #carsoncougs #edge #firstgenerationcollegestudent

[NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL INVESTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION] Northwestern Mutual will issue more than $2.5 million in grants and scholarships over the next five years to enable 136 students from local Milwaukee schools to pursue higher education at historically black colleges and universities (#HBCUs). $2 million of the total will go to longtime Northwestern Mutual partner All-In Milwaukee, an organization that will directly support the 100 student recipients in attending college with financial, academic, social, wellness, and career-readiness aid. $500k of the total will go to 36 students over five years that will receive $7.5k their freshman and sophomore years and paid internship opportunities their junior and senior years. The internships will not only give the students important exposure to career opportunities, but may also result in full-time employment at Northwestern Mutual. Northwestern Mutual Foundation President Steven Radke says, "If we want to see change in our community, it's imperative we invest in students who will pave the way for the generations to come. Our investment will provide these students with access to education and the opportunity to bring diverse perspectives and contributions to their prospective employers. Our commitment goes beyond financial aid; we offer authentic support throughout the entire process." In this Forbes piece, Matt Gandal highlights the recent Strada Education Foundation’s State Opportunity Index, and the two critical elements of students’ higher education experience that can lead to greater economic opportunity and mobility: ⚡ Work-based learning experiences such as paid internships ⚡ Access to quality career coaching and advising “Colleges in most states have considerable work to do for these experiences to become the norm for their students. Nationally, only a quarter of graduates from community colleges and a fifth of graduates from four-year institutions experienced personalized career coaching. And when it comes to paid internships, only one out of four four-year students and one out of 10 community college students were able to participate.” We are committed to making high-quality, work-based learning opportunities a universal element of higher education in the United States. Connect with us to see our programs in partnership with Fortune 500 companies and leading #highered institutions like Arizona State University, The University of Texas at El Paso and Northern Kentucky University in action and learn more about how you can work with us to make work-based learning the norm for all students! #workbasedlearning #stradaeducationfoundation #earlycareertalent #highered #internships #talentdevelopment #collegerecruiting

https://lnkd.in/gBTQJFPa Some great information in this about the challenges and rewards of vocational training versus obtaining a degree. It also emphasizes a more holistic approach combining classroom training, internships and other guidance versus just teaching someone how to weld. The other thing I found interesting, but not surprising, is how many parents are resistant to vocational ed programs because they want better opportunities for their kids which they believe only come from pursuing the University track in the German educational system. A hurdle we have here in the States as well. If you're interested in how a country with a solid history of apprenticeships and vocational training is adapting that model to the 21st century this is a wonderful article peruse. I certainly think many parts of Germany's approach would make sense to implement here in the States.

Interest among youth in alternatives to college degrees continues to grow, but a new survey indicates many young people don’t know much about non-degree options or how to determine their quality. The survey from American Student Assistance and Jobs for the Future (JFF) examines non-college-bound youth’s perspectives on education and career plans. What it finds is that there is an increased interest in non-degree pathway programs — apprenticeships, boot camps, licenses, certificates and certifications — but a lack of understanding about those programs appears to be a barrier. #EdChat #SCchat #higheredchat
