We’ve led a collaborative and systems thinking approach to refreshing our Clinical Champions programme for 2024. We’ve gathered insights from Clinical Champions, healthcare professionals, people with lived experience of inequalities, leadership development professionals, our Tackling Inequality Commission report leaders, and strategic decision makers to build on the successes of the programme to make it even more impactful than ever. Bringing such a diverse range of voices to the table has been integral to strategising, designing and implementing this offer to healthcare professionals, who are tirelessly working to improve diabetes essential care for all. Some things are too big to tackle alone. That’s why we’ve worked together to refresh the programme with an ethos of collaboration, co-creation and collective strength. The Clinical Champions programme brings healthcare professionals together from across the UK to develop their systems leadership capabilities, skills to manage upwards, and to form key networks and partnerships in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. Refreshing the programme has involved consulting to truly understand diverse perspectives and creating environments where people feel safe and welcome to express their thoughts, opinions, and needs, especially when disagreeing on emotive subjects. Neutralising power dynamics has played a key part in this too, making sure that the loudest voices with the most power don’t necessarily get the final say and the quietest voices don’t get ignored. I believe strongly in living my own values. Practice what you preach etc. That’s why it was important to me that we used a collaborative, systems practice approach in the refresh process so we can continue to authentically support and develop leaders and people with potential to work towards a world where diabetes can do no harm. I strongly encourage any diabetes healthcare professionals passionate about developing their systems leadership capabilities and wanting to create lasting change in a collaborative environment, to have a look at the programme and apply. The programme is completely free. (Reminds me of a former colleague in a different role who used to say to potential participants, “all you need is bags of enthusiasm and a pen…and we supply the pens”).
