On International Women's Day, I'm happy to announce that I'm a judge for Management Today's 35 women under 35. I'm really looking forward to hearing from and about passionate, ambitious, visionary women who've ripped up the rule book, are making a real impact in the business world and redefining what it is to be a leader, whilst empowering those around them. So please enter for yourself or for others (cheerlead for any business women you think are bossing it!). And for those out there still striving: here's a few tips I hope might help... - Have passion, purpose and ambition: Have a purpose, remain true to it, and excite and inspire those around you with it. - Be confident: Know your worth, don’t be humble and empower other women around you to know theirs. Have an opinion and be confident in delivering it.  - Be creative: Challenge thinking and innovate to deliver impact. - Find your place in the room: Find your unique USP and develop that muscle, until the business couldn’t be without it. And know that you cannot do and be everything and nor should you. - Be curious: Remain open to learning from anywhere and anyone within the business. - Get comfortable being uncomfortable (and be resilient!): Seek out ways to continually challenge yourself. - And, above all else, lead with compassion and honesty: Know that a healthy business is based on people and not just profit. I’m still not over last week’s Women’s Business Alliance meeting! I’m grateful for the The Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce Inc. and the women of this great organization allowing me to be their guest speaker this month. We spent our time together discussing impostor syndrome and redefining what it means to show up as women in business; followed by great dialog and encouragement from the ladies in the room. Below are a few key takeaways from our time: - It’s okay to feel awkward about putting yourself out there and bragging about your accolades; that’s being a human, not an impostor. Don’t let that feeling keep you from showing up and sitting at tables where you belong and can make an impact. - We ARE impostors though, if we let the feeling of inadequacy or fear take root so deeply that we quit showing up authentically for our people and our spaces. - We must recognize our value and bring our unique gifts to the table. There is enough business to go around. Not everyone will be a great fit for you and that’s okay. Show up in the best ways for those who are a great fit because they need exactly what YOU can offer. - Ultimately, there is only one you. And much like a puzzle with a missing piece, our communities are not the same without each person bringing their gifts to the table to make us all better. - Therefore, we will be audacious women (and men). We will be bold, daring, and unflinching in taking risks. We wrapped up with a discussion question that I’ll pose here too (in case this resonates with you), where do you want to be a year from now? 'Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.' This Women's Day, I'm reminded of the powerful words of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It underscores the importance of every young woman finding her path in the professional world. Here are three vital lessons I've gathered on my journey as a young woman navigating her own professional path: 1. Mentorship Matters: Connect with mentors who inspire you. Their experience and guidance can help you make more informed decisions. 3. Learn from Setbacks: View failures as invaluable lessons, not defeats. They are essential to your growth, teaching resilience, and preparing you for future successes. 2. Celebrate Your Achievements: Every milestone, no matter its size, is worth celebrating! Honour these moments—they are your stepping stones to greatness. Your path is uniquely yours, filled with infinite possibilities and opportunities for growth. Who's on your personal Board of Directors? At the CEO of You® , we believe that if you don't have a personal Board of Directors, you need to get one. A Northwestern University study found that most successful women surround themselves with other women. The study found 75% of high-ranking women maintained a female-dominated inner circle or strong ties to 2 or 3 women they frequently communicated versus men with a more extensive network regardless of gender makeup. As women, relationships (connections) are good for us. They not only encourage but also challenge and sharpen us. I never thought it would be easy. But, like most people starting a business, I wonder if I was prepared for just how difficult it would be. Two years after starting The Courage Company, I began questioning everything. Was I really supposed to start a business? Was I in the right business? Was I doing it right? Should I go back to an executive corporate role? Go back to being comfortable and collecting a "sure" paycheck. But one thing I knew for sure, even with my accounts at the lowest they had ever been, I was right where I was supposed to be doing what I've been called and purposed to do! In the midst of worry, God was already at work. I met a woman running the Women's Business Center of Charlotte just a few months before. Her name is Natalie Williams. I'd just published my first book, How to Leap from Your Career to Your Calling. She asked me to develop and facilitate one of their new business programs for new entrepreneurs. At the conclusion of that program, we were recognized by the City Council of Charlotte (see pics). It has been the support of clients and friends like Natalie that fueled our growth. It's always my honor to support her as she has supported me. I cant wait to speak at her Heart of a Women business conference this October in Charlotte. I will lead a session on mindset and transformation and participate in a panel on the impacts of the Supreme Court's most recent diversity decisions. I'd say 95% of the female leaders I mentor are uncomfortable with the idea of visibility or putting themselves out there. They say things like: 1. "I don't want to come across as self-promotional." 2. "I'd rather my work speak for itself." 3. "I don't know where to start or what to say." 4. "I think I'm just a perfectionist." 5. "Who wants to hear from me?" 6. "Do I know enough to share my thoughts and ideas?" 7. "I don't have time." I could provide reframes for each of these (I do when working with clients—comment below if you want one and which number resonates), but here's something I'd love everyone to understand: PEOPLE AREN'T JUDGING YOU AS MUCH AS YOU THINK THEY ARE. The 'Spotlight Effect' says that we overestimate the degree to which other people are observing and judging us. Wouldn't it be nice if people were thinking about us all the time ha? But the truth is, most people are preoccupied with their own lives. In my experience, people are genuinely curious; they want to know what you are up to and are interested in learning from your experiences. They are not sitting around waiting for you to post or share a video just to judge or criticise you. I know we read this on little quote tiles on the internet and understand this on a logical level, but what is it going to take for you to truly internalise this? I have a few ideas... And I'll be sharing them on Thursday evening at the City of Charles Sturt and the Office for Small and Family Business Western Business Leaders - Women in the West event. A few people have asked if this event is only for women in the western suburbs, and it absolutely is not— all women are welcome! I'll pop the link to register in the comments below. In today's session of the Future Forward Female Mastermind led by the incredible Debola Deji - Kurunmi she dropped a truth bomb that had my heart doing somersaults: "Even though gifts open doors, it is refined mastery that keeps you within rooms." Those words hit me like a bolt of lightning and sparked a cascade of thoughts about the conversations I've had with powerful women in senior leadership roles. These women consistently emphasize the importance of sticking to something, of refining your skills until you're the best at what you do. For them, It's all about digging deep, putting in the work, and mastering your craft. And in our generation where everyone seems to be on the hunt for the 'next big thing', their message stands out loud and clear. Sure, as young people, we're wired to explore, to try our hand at different things before settling down. Some chase after the thrill of novelty, while others are in pursuit of that coveted promotion. Our motivations vary, and so do our journeys. I'll be the first to admit that my journey has been a winding one. I've taken detours, explored different paths, and even wrote about it in a previous post. But as I progress in my career, I'm realizing the power of focus, consistency, and mastery. You see, I've always been praised for being smart, wise, intelligent, and talented. And while those accolades are nice, something is missing. Despite my creativity and talent, I've never quite been the best at anything. It's like the old saying goes: "Jack of all trades, master of none." If you were to ask someone to identify my specialty, they might struggle to pinpoint it. And that realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Because here's the thing – while gifts might open doors, it's mastery that keeps those doors from slamming shut. It's about becoming so good at what you do that people can't help but take notice. And that's a journey I'm embarking on – the journey towards mastery.
