The recent Boeing horror story illustrates that Optimization is more a matter of guesswork, despite its apparent mathematical exactitude. In the 80’s Boeing had 2 narrow-bodies, the 757 and 737. The 757 was more innovative than the 737, but the 737 had more customers. They would have to train their crews to switch from the 737 to 757, reducing their buying incentive. So Boeing killed the 757 and kept modifying the older 737 design. Today the 737 Max is becoming a patchwork and a QA nightmare. Why is the venerable Boeing 737 still around? Given the last few weeks of turmoil, I think a lot of people have asked that very question. The 737 has had an unprecedented, almost 60 year long, production-run and with the current order-book, it looks certain to continue until at least the end of the decade. But how has it been able to stay competitive in this era of carbon-composites and fly-by-wire? Is this THE END of the Boeing 737?! After nearly 60 years the 737 has reached the end of its design life. A fuselage that was designed for the 707 back in the 1950s that has been stretched and re-engined more times than most people can remember, a Frankenstein of an aircraft designed for a very different purpose than it is being used for today. While production may continue for some years to come, the disastrous MAX will almost certainly be the very last model and if the MAX-7 and MAX-10 ever get approved then the very last versions.
