🖌️ ABIDE BY THESE EIGHT PRINCIPLES TO AVOID FALLING PREY TO GREENWASHING 🖌️ Surely you've seen big brands being accused of greenwashing practices, and you've probably been worried that the same thing could happen to your company. You can relay on many different communication guidelines to avoid greenwashing! These principles focus on three pillars: information, culture, and advocacy. 📔Information - Lead with Science 1️⃣Commit to evidence-based transparency: communication must be based on credible scientific data and clearly presented to educate the public about the environmental impact of fashion. 2️⃣ Ensuring that information is clear and accessible: understandable and readily available information is essential for consumers to make informed decisions. _________ 🏛️ Culture - Change Behaviors and Practices 3️⃣ Eliminate messages that encourage overconsumption: it is vital to promote moderation in the consumption of fashion goods, counteracting the "buy more" culture. 4️⃣ Promote positive changes and accessible circular solutions: encourage and highlight practices that enable a more sustainable lifestyle, such as recycling, reusing and renting clothing. 5️⃣ Highlight new role models and concepts of aspiration or success: celebrate figures who embody and promote sustainable lifestyles, redefining the concept of success in fashion. 6️⃣ Focus on inclusive marketing and storytelling that celebrates fashion's ecological, cultural and social values: fashion should be inclusive and representative, valuing diversity and the social benefits of sustainable practices. _________ 🗣️Advocacy - Drive Advocacy 7️⃣ Motivate and mobilize the public to support broader change: consumers should be encouraged to become activists in demanding more sustainable practices in the fashion industry. #sustainable #communication #guidelines #principles #fashion

Today I listened to Recloseted Radio, the Recloseted podcast that provides a resource to fashion brands looking to become more sustainable, as well as those interested in starting a sustainable fashion brand. Specifically, I listened to Episode 161: Creating your First Sustainability Report -- Interview with Amanda Lapham from Wolven about their sustainability efforts. Wolven's Impact Reports (found here: https://lnkd.in/eTzvJrcb ) are an awesome example of how companies (not just fashion brands!) can hold themselves accountable for their sustainability efforts. Amanda also points out something important: Sustainability is about more than just the environment. It is also about supporting communities -- locally, nationally, and internationally. A whole section of their Impact Report is dedicated to highlighting the organizations they support. They are a 1% for the Planet member, and donate 1% of their revenue to 6 organizations that support environmentally focused organizations through the Planet Impact Fund. I found something interesting exploring sustainable fashion these past months… I uncovered it’s ties to broader environmental stewardship beyond just the clothing industry, and that there’s an interconnectedness of sustainable fashion with the well-being of the entire planet’s ecosystems. Here are key observations I stumbled across ; ♻️ Sustainable fashion choices minimize water usage in production processes, preserving water bodies from pollution and depletion. By opting for water-saving techniques and recycled materials, we protect vital water resources for communities and ecosystems. ♻️ Sustainable fashion goes handy with ethical fashion, that is ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for garment workers contributing to social justice and economic empowerment. By supporting ethical labor practices, we advocate for the dignity and rights of workers throughout the fashion supply chain. ♻️ Animal welfare is being prioritized in the sustainable fashion industry. By opting for alternatives such as plant-based or synthetic fibers, we reduce the demand for practices that harm animals. Choosing cruelty-free materials and supporting brands that abstain from using animal-derived products promotes compassion and respect for animals. As we recognize the interconnectedness of sustainable fashion with other climate actions, we can amplify our efforts to combat climate change and create a more sustainable future for generations after us 🍂 #sustainablefashion #climateaction #circulareconomy

This year's motto for World Environment Day by UN Environment Programme: "We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. What is the role of #corporatesustainability? According to Auden Schendler and Aspen One, here is a good breakdown of what it is NOT: 📓 #carbonaccounting , #reporting , #certifications , #carbonoffsets, emissions tracking, measuring #waste and #water and operational greening. Essentially, everything that 99% of the tasks that consume understaffed corporate sustainability departments. To make the point, the Aspen One’s 14 page 2024 Sustainability Report does none of these things (except one). Instead, the report details Aspen One’s action and advocacy for system change, including work to…. 🖼️ Advance new rules / #legislation , support change making research, fund culture makers, build net zero buildings. And, report on its 22 year #co2 reduction journey (because they can’t help themselves). This prod turns me back to the fashion industry and reflect on the leadership of brands like Cotopaxi, EILEEN FISHER, INC., Reformation, Everlane, Stella McCartney and Patagonia who are among the many companies that are actively supporting passage of the New York Fashion Act… And…the absence of trade associations and all of the big, public fashion sustainability champions that have already been approved for SBTI (e.g. Levi Strauss & Co. As an industry, we talk about the need to transition away from the current linear system towards a circular model that minimizes waste and maximizes resource use by keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible. This involves designing clothes to last longer, recycling materials to create new garments, and prioritizing repair and reuse over disposal. But as the fashion industry embraces this circular vision, what does this new system look like, and WHO gets to define it? Who’s at the table when we think about fashion’s circular future, and who’s not? 👀 Historically, discussions on circularity have been dominated by voices from the Global North, especially Western countries. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that the fashion industry’s impacts are global. Therefore, the perspectives and experiences of those in the Global South, where much of the production occurs and the waste ends up, must also be central to the conversation. 💯 During the Sustainable Fashion Forum conference last year, Nicole Bassett, co-founder of The Renewal Workshop and Circularity Lead at Bleckmann, emphasized the need to reimagine the concept of circularity in a way that doesn’t perpetuate harmful legacies or exclude marginalized voices. 💫 Fashion’s approach to circularity needs to be inclusive. True progress toward sustainability and equity can only be achieved by confronting and dismantling systemic injustices. So very happy to see this work published! The Fashion Nature Risk Lens (a global, subnational estimate of land-use and #biodiversity and #deforestation risk for textiles) and The Fashion Strategy Tool Navigator occupied much of my thoughts and hours for nearly two years. It's so great to look back on it, and I'm particularly excited to hear how companies are using these tools today. Here are some tips for using the Fashion Nature Risk Lens: 🌳 Textile production, especially for #leather and #viscose is linked to deforestation. Use the maps to view how material production overlaps with WWF's #deforestation hotspots. This can give you an early idea of risk areas in your value chain, supporting early screening as part of initial preparation for upcoming sustainability legislations such as #EUDR and #CSRD, for example. As research and data on production and supply chain improves, you can replace these with more granular and company-specific datasets. 🎯 Land-use and land-use change is globally the biggest driver of biodiversity loss, and the fashion sector uses a lot of it! The Nature Risk Lens estimates that half of all agricultural land (2.4 billion hectares) is some way connected to fashion material production. When discounting co-products like meat and dairy, that reduces to 290 million hectares- an area greater than the size of Argentina. This gives an idea of the fashion sector's proportionate responsibility for supporting global nature protection and restoration, for example as part of the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework goals. 🗺 Use the subnational #landuse estimates and biodiversity risk layers (#STAR) to understand how these are expected to vary globally. This can give you an idea of where to prioritise implementation of regenerative agriculture targets, for example It was such a huge pleasure to work with Conservation International, The Fashion Pact, The Biodiversity Consultancy Ltd, Stephanie Harris, Vineet Katariya, Jamie Graham and Joe Turner on this work and I can't wait to see how the fashion sector continues to rise to the challenge of #naturepositive.
