#Brands often send...I'll generously term them *contradictory* signals. The latest Swatch-Blancpain collab is called "Ocean of Storms," a USD 400 homage to the historic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch. In keeping with Blancpain's "commitment" to ocean conservation, the watch is cased in a "bio-ceramic" material (which is a fancy marketing term for recycled plastic) and its strap is made from used fishnets. But here's my fundamental issue: to keep costs down, the watch uses Swatch's mechanical Sistem51 movement, which is hermetically sealed inside the case and unserviceable by design. One of the best things about mechanical wristwatches is, as long as they are properly maintained, they can keep running for decades. Sistem51 watches will last only 18 months to five years before they become worthless and you will be forced to throw them away. In short, Blancpain has made a plastic watch that is essentially disposable. 🤔 I thought disposable plastic was the worst thing for our ocean ecosystems?
