It's hard to believe this talk from Sir Ken Robinson is now 10 years old. Sadly, it's *not* hard to believe we haven't reinvented #education, not least of which is conformity and command-and-control over creativity and curiosity. Whether or not you work directly in the profession, you and your organization are affected--deeply, daily--by the outcomes of this system, which twists what many kids are capable of, and refocuses them instead along a very, very narrow spectrum of possibility and achievement that just happens to be measurable on a computer-graded multiple-choice exam. You care. You want employees who can: - work effectively in teams? - imagine alternative solutions to complex problems? - lead with empathy, vision, and clarity? - design systems, tools, and technologies that address emerging needs? - see the big picture and play the long game? Creativity and curiosity are prerequisite skills, and the opportunity to hone them shouldn't be limited to the handful of kids who are privileged enough to attend schools with the flexibility to teach this way. "The dominant culture of education has come to focus on not teaching and learning, but testing... So in place of curiosity, what we have is a culture of compliance. Our children and teachers are encouraged to follow routine algorithms rather than to excite that power of imagination and curiosity." I've worked on both sides. I see the connections between schooling and "the real world" every. single. day. Just got off a presentation by Nicole R Smith, CVA, run by the United Way British Columbia. Great insights! A few key takeaways for me were: "The higher a person's level of education, the more likely they are to volunteer." Which means we have to stop treating volunteers as menial labour! And "Education is the "what"; training is the "how"." In other words, educate volunteers about your mission, your clients, etc, and train them in specific tasks. Fantastic presentation, Nicole!!
