As we round up for the Easter break, what's a great example of leadership you've seen recently? Here's an example of visionary leadership from Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, MHCM and her team at HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL. Recognising and appreciating the intrinsic value of your leaders as whole human beings and not just professionals has a ripple effect. Everyone starts feeling better about themselves and will be more likely to interact with and encourage others in the same way. It's a win-win. Bravo to Houston Methodist for modelling this so well. How can you encourage your team? Own your #value Use your #VO1CE

In 2024 it’s going to be AI that will help mediate the documentation burden. Let’s not forget these clipboards were caused in part by E&M coding rules enacted in 1995 and updated in 1997. It forced doctors to collect all kinds of information no one cared about except for billing. AI is going to change this in a revolutionary way.

In my fellowship work we found #patientsatisfaction went *down* on introduction of an #HIT solution piloted in the #pediatric #emergencymedicine waiting room for parent-entered information. Why? The printout, not part of usual workflows, was not used and never referenced by clinicians. Although parents were entering data via a kiosk while waiting to be seen, it still resulted in irritation. Satisfaction dropped most in Black families, maybe as these families already experience not being heard. My own late mother, exhausted by #fibromyalgia pain, a poorly understood condition, often was (quietly) frustrated by being asked the same thing five times. My past fellowship reseach from Harvard Medical School & Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health drove home that a tool is only as effective as its use in clinical workflows. This informs how I build HER Heard. While I am a believer of #patientengagement app for patient-driven #data for better care, I know more data alone cannot improve #outcomes. So how do we deliver value to women in this fragmented system of perverse incentives and when science lacks data on #womenshealth? On the team, we make sure we ask ourselves these tough questions. As #AI takes over, missing data pose an even bigger threat. If your data are not used to train #algorithms, how can you get safe & effective care? Personally, as a woman patient (and as a caregiver to my late mother), I experienced delays in diagnosis, poor outcomes, side effects, and lost productivity because the system lacked data, evidence, knowledge to provide effective, safe, personalized care. I used to write & enforce “#evidencebased” guidelines for hospitals https://lnkd.in/ewbiaGSa & for the Commonwealth. https://lnkd.in/ejmNtuhK I still believe in #evidencebasedmedicine while no longer accepting being limited to “#evidencebased” guidelines. #Clinicaltrials excluded women until 1993 and 8 out of 10 drugs withdrawn from the market have toxicity in women. That is unacceptable. Equally unacceptable is some low quality “#reseach” published as hyped up “women’s health” but lacks scientific rigor. It is not merely being a data or analytics snob. #GIGO or “garbage in, garbage out” wastes time and misleads. Women deserve high quality data & research. Only then can we build solutions to change outcomes in individuals or at scale. #Dataintegrity is needed. We need data & #science that works for all of us. Nothing about us without us. Still a long way to go for a full automation, and seamless data connectivity in the hospitals. 2023 and coming years are the transition phase to achieving it.
