In some respects, the biotech landscape is like the Wild West right now. We're seeing incredible advancements in AI tech, shifting industry dynamics, obstacles in lifecycle optimization, and so much more. It’s a lot of change to try to stay ahead of, but the BioNJ C-Suite Summit is at the cutting edge.   As a proud board member of BioNJ, I might be a bit biased, but I genuinely believe this will be one of the most exciting and thought-provoking summits for our industry. I’ll be participating on a panel discussion on the current ecosystem and share some of the biggest lessons learned from recent trends impacting the industry. My fellow panelists (Tom Cavanaugh, Anthony Pagano, and Deborah Glasser) and I will tackle some crucial questions on what the next 10 years will look like and how to continue to create value for both the business and the patients we serve, including:   1. How do we see GenAI impacting and accelerating areas like R&D and commercialization? 2. What are the areas of highest unmet need and how can we improve care to make a difference? 3. What areas are we falling short in providing the best care for patients, and how can we improve to better meet their needs? 4. What swing factors or success factors are we anticipating navigating uncertainties like pricing and access challenges, globalization, tech?   The discussions and insights shared at this summit are bound to be game-changers for our industry. Great panel with Tjeerd-Pieter van Staa and Dr Emma Magavern organised and moderated by Videha Sharma at the AI & Data Conference last week. We discussed translating personalised medicine solutions into real-world products and the importance of scientific basis and sustainable business models. 🔬 One of the questions I received was: "Are investors' expectations of return a positive driver for innovation and scalability?" The return expectation is driving innovation as it enables startups to move faster, experiment and take more risks than academia. It can also drive sustainability as it forces companies to understand the stakeholders in the market and create value for them. However, it takes a good level of alignment and expectations setting between companies and investors, given the regulatory, clinical safety, and compliance requirements in the precision medicine space. If only there was a Magic 8 ball for the biotech industry 🎱 These days, there is so much conflicting news about our industry. 2023 has been a tough year for many companies, and those of us who have worked decades in biotech have lived through downturns followed by dramatic rebounds. There is no question that the market for improved disease treatment will continue to grow—access continues to expand and technology continues to develop—but what everyone wonders is when will the turnaround occur. In the past two days, I've read two very contradictory views on the state of the industry. 1️⃣ In their article "The 2023 Biotech Graveyard", Max Bayer and Gabrielle Masson describe the 22 biotechs that have closed shop during the first 10 months of this year. This is more than 3X the number of closures during 2022, and as the authors note, there was no common thread linking the victims: "There wasn’t a consistent theme among the biotechs that landed in the graveyard this year, with biotechs spanning disease areas, modalities and whether they were private or public. " https://lnkd.in/dPyj-UDJ 2️⃣ While Bayer and Masson paint a not-so-pretty picture of what's passed, Allison DeAngelis gives a much more optimistic view of the future in her article "Life science investors close nearly $6 billion in new funds". I can only second Audrey Greenberg's conclusion that this inflow of capital "certainly reflects strong confidence in the future of life sciences and the potential for innovation in healthcare." https://lnkd.in/dyr4EWxQ 🐂 Will 2024 be the return of the bull in our industry? I shook my Magic 8-ball this morning, but the prediction was very non-committal. 😁

A Decade of Bold Proclamations and Innovative Healthcare Solutions "Victory has a hundred fathers and defeat is an orphan." This quote, often attributed to John F. Kennedy, resonates with me as I reflect on the journey of iScribes, DAX and Bionic Health over the past decade. In 2014, I stood on the stage at CED (Council for Entrepreneurial Development) Venture Week and made a bold statement: we would automate scribing. Fast forward to today, and we've achieved that goal. Microsoft Co-Pilot and Nuance Communications DAX Co-Pilot are now industry standards, with DAX and Microsoft leading the way.
