If you lack passion for what you do, the people under you and the people above you will notice. So, you ask, what is my passion! My passion has always been and always will be people. My heart leaps every time one of my candidates gets that interview that they really wanted, or when I am able to coach someone into applying for and landing a role that is really them and not just some job. If I can work with brand new college grads or interns, Veterans, or older candidates who have finally realized their passion in life and just need a shot...ALL THE BETTER! Find you passion...it will never steer you wrong. If you love what you are doing, your job will never be work, it will be the passion project that you never want to stop doing!

#dare to perform, the audience is never a concern. A shoe company was looking out for a sales team. They started taking interviews. The only task was to go to a small village and do market research whether the shoes can be sold there. Two candidates were sent together and asked to submit their reports within 3 days. They needed to ask the people, search for objectives "why will you buy the shoes" and also understand the future possibilities. After 3 days the research was presented. The 1st candidate had a single sentence to mention "Since nobody wears shoes in the village, that is "not" where we should sell these shoes" The 2 nd candidate presented his theory "Since nobody wears shoes in the village that is the place where we should set up the shop". The company hired the 2nd candidate. The question is why not the 1st candidate? Obviously not because he could not see the possibility. Or he is a negative thinker, a much "not" needed criteria for being in the sales category. It's also not because there were 2 candidates, he denied the sales in the same place. This post is not about trying to find out why the 2nd candidate was hired. It's to find out the possibilities of why the other candidate was not hired. When we try to find out all that we do to achieve our goals, we should also jot down those aspects which we practice and are not allowing us to reach out goals. eg. My friend has a habit of keeping the phone away from his desk when he is working on an important project. Yet when he takes a break for 5 mins and checks his social media, he finds it difficult to use those 5 mins genuinely. And that was the place where he wanted to do something about. It's not possible to be #productive 100% of your time, but you can have a set time where you could be 100% productive. Considering today is Valentine's Day ❤️, it is perhaps apt to note how many young adults continue to make like a co-dependent partner in a toxic relationship when it comes to searching for that ideal job and employer. In my past 2.5 months as a career advisor, it is not uncommon to witness many a student adopt a "machine-gun, bullet-spray" approach to looking for a job instead of employing a more targetted "one-hit, one-kill" approach. Often times, the signalling to potential employers in their resumes, cover letters and interviews smacks of the desperate plea: "I can be anything you want me to be; just give me the job already!" Having watched the video on the difference between having a plan and having a strategy, I was inspired to think how rather than help our young adult students plan for just their first job and next step in life, it may be more useful to help them strategise for their future goals and outcomes instead. And what this may entail from a career advisory point-of-view is: 1️⃣ Position them for impact 👊 and purpose not just for job roles, titles and pay scales. 2️⃣ Help them identify their unique combination of talents, strengths 💯, motivations, and potential contributions. 3️⃣ Build their self-confidence and self-assurance in who they are and their unique perspective 👀 on the world. We can do this by getting our youth to start articulating a personal mission statement in terms of the impact they would like to make on the world using the unique combination of skills and talents they have. This can take the form of a unique selling proposition, personal statement and/or LinkedIn About section write-up sans the income and title aspirations which do little by way of building an enriching and fulfilling life. My belief is that if we can teach our youth to start thinking and behaving like whole persons rather than only half of a person in desperate need of an ideal job and pay in order to complete them, perhaps they will be better able to achieve the sixth tier of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - self-transcendence - and find true happiness, fulfillment and meaning in life. What's my personal mission statement now? To align individual identities to their destinies and bring out the best in people. Last month, I participated in an interview with the University of Georgia on what it was like to be a working mom in today's world. I found out about it from a post by Jackie Cook, founder of Popins LLC, (I can't find that post now). 🎭 To set the scene 🎭 I did this interview after 3️⃣ straight days of 3️⃣ kids throwing up all over the house (at what age do kids get better about aiming for a receptacle when vomiting?). I opened with "I haven't slept in three days and have zero filter right now, please don't show this video to anyone." Whenever we are honest talking to someone else, we realize or reaffirm insights into our present situations. Participating in that interview highlighted three main points for me on being a working parent. 1️⃣ Flexibility in work schedules is a must have in today's culture. ⏱ I take 15 mins in the morning to drop my kids off at school instead of taking 15 mins to have breakfast in a cafeteria. 🕰 I work a few hours later at night if that means my preschooler has an event that requires me to watch him sing off-key with his classmates. ⌚ I cannot think of perk, including salary increases, that would entice me to give up this benefit. 2️⃣ Trust is everything. ⚓ I trust my CEO, my company, and my entire team. It is humbling to know they trust me as well. We trust each other to show up every day and chip away at problems. ⛵ When someone says they need to take care of something personal, we trust them. We support them. We welcome them when they come back without question because we trust each other's integrity and values. This trust lets me take care of my family, and myself, without question, guilt, or worry. 3️⃣ It's not about the job anymore. 🎓 Graduating college and starting a career, my focus was the job - the title - the responsibilities. How high I can climb - it was resume focused. 📈 Don't get me wrong, I'm still driven and have career goals. But the goals are not in dollars and resume keywords. The goals are now measured in who I can help and how I can help and the example my kids see when they wonder into my office after school. Being a working parent has redefined the term 'successful career' for me. Our weeks move fast. There often isn't time for reflection.
